MSFS 2024 black screen

This morning I updated to the new nVidia driver, new DLSS 310.2.1 and attempted to set up DLSS 4 following the instructions on Youtube. Now, when starting 2024, the first part takes over 30 seconds, then a black screen for about 15 seconds, then the XBOX Game Studios message, then a black screen and I can only get out of it using task manager. So, I uninstalled nVidia app, rolled back to driver 566.36, but there is no change. What have I done? My system is i9-14900KF, RTX 4090, 64GB DDR5, Win 11 v. 24H2. Everything was so great prior to this!

Hi @ArrantSpring97 ,

Since there has been no help, I decided to try to revert back to the way it was working so well. Uninstalled the nVidia app, set profile inspector back to defaults, swapped DLSS to 3.8.10, rolled the nVidia Driver back to 566.14. Restarted the computer, and still just a black screen. Don’t know why, but ONE time during all the fiddling around, the sim actually started, but was a stutterfest. How can I get back to my original state? Don’t want to reinstall the sim if I can help it!

I have the same CPU as you with a 4080 Super. My problem was different in that my CPU usage was higher than normal after loading the game. Like stuck in some kind of loop.

I tried using DDU to uninstall 572.16 and reverting back to 566.14. That did not help.

I don’t know if you are in the beta. If you are try leaving the beta and see if that helps. If all else fails then you will need to reinstall the game. That’s what I ended up having to do and after I confirmed the game was working I rejoined the beta. My CPU usage is still higher than normal after the game loads but it settles down to normal within a couple of minutes.

Unfortunately Nvidia’s latest driver, and hotfix is still causing issues with many people. Sorry you are having problems.

What a mess.

Thank you so much for the speedy reply. I am not in the beta, just MS Store version of 2024. Guess a re-install is in order, I haven’t been able to fly for a week now and I’m having severe withdrawal symptoms! Should I get the beta?

Yes I do recommend the beta. You can always opt out if you don’t like it. But make sure all is well after you reinstall before joining the beta.

OK. Thanks again. I’m off to re-install. I have 2024 installed on a separate drive. After I get it running correctly, should I install the beta on my C: drive?

It’s worth noting that leaving the beta version will require you to re-download and install approximately 12GB of game data.

Wherever you have it installed is where the beta will install. It is a 9.1gb download.

Thank you, that’s fine.

Yw

If you’re an advanced user and not afraid to experiment, I’d be curious to see if disabling Hyper Threading (HT) in the BIOS makes any difference.

Just finished re-installing 2024 (non-beta). No community folder, just started right after install. 37 seconds on the opening screen, then to black and about 15 seconds later, the XBox Game Studios Logo, that disappears and I am then in never-never land, just a black screen and after five minutes or so, I just use Task Manager to end the program. What now? I’ll try turning off HT in BIOS and report back.

Disabled HyperThread in BIOS. No difference. I am so frustrated!!

Only thing I can think of is did you use DDU to uninstall the driver? If not I suggest it. Either way try reinstalling the driver then reboot. Sorry.. I can relate to the frustration.

I’m unable to use DDU because I can’t get into safe mode. Will reinstall and try again.

And we have liftoff!!! Was able to create a new user and get into safe mode and ran DDU to remove the driver. Re-installed the driver and started MSFS and it loaded fine. Took a short flight, all was fine. Shut the sim down, restarted the computer, restarted MSFS and it loaded fine once again. This time I flew the same flight, but in VR (Pimax Crystal Light) and wow!! Don’t know what my FPS is, but that flight was SO smo-o-o-oth! Not a single stutter and the graphics were amazing. Now to put my community folder back in and try with some of my add-ons. I think I’ll wait on the beta for awhile. I would like to try getting back into DLSS 4 once again, but that is what got me into this mess in the first place! By the way, I am 86 years old and have been simming since 1982! Thank you ALL for your concern and help!

Awesome. I read some of your older posts while searching for bitlocker and came to understand your dilemma. For the first time tonight I tried to get into safe mode and realized I need my bitlocker key which I have but was too lazy to enter it.

I have been running DDU without going into safe mode. I guess I should be in safe mode when I run it. Anyways happy you are back up and running. BTW, I too played the first version of MSFS and have bought every version since. :slightly_smiling_face:

Happy Flying!

Hii i hope u are still here. I am having the same exact problem. I am not so tech savvy. Can you explain a bit more in detail or simpler what you did to fix the issue??

Sorry for not responding sooner, but we had a severe wildfire about 1/2 mile away and the power company shut off our power for four hours. First of all, you must download the DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller). Before running it, go into Windows Safe Mode and then run DDU and tell it to uninstall all nVidia driver info. Then re-boot, go back to Windows mode (not safe), and re-install the new nVidia driver. I have not had another problem since. I hope this is of help, it has been quite some time since I did this, so trying to recall everything. Good luck!!!

System Specs

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB

  • RAM: 32 GB DDR5

  • OS: Windows 11 Pro (latest updates)

  • GPU Driver: NVIDIA Game Ready (latest version)

Issue
When launching MSFS 2024, after the loading screen the simulator often gets stuck with:

  • Entire screen turns black.

  • Background music continues to play.

  • No crash-to-desktop, no error message.

  • After restarting the sim 2–3 times, it eventually loads normally.

Observations

  • Short stutters before the sim either goes black or successfully loads.

  • Once the sim starts correctly, it runs stable and without further issues.

  • Seems to occur more often on the first start after a PC reboot.

Troubleshooting Done

  • Clean reinstall of NVIDIA GPU drivers.

  • Shader cache cleared.

  • Rolling cache disabled and re-created.

  • All overlays disabled (Discord, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner).

Problem persists.

Expected Behavior
After the loading screen, the simulator should directly continue to the main menu without going black or requiring multiple restarts.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Reboot PC.

  2. Start MSFS 2024.

  3. Wait for the loading screen to finish.

  4. → Screen goes black, only music continues.

Possible Cause
Could be related to GPU initialization / DirectX 12 / Shader compilation / DirectStorage on startup.
