MSFS 2024 performance collapses / stuttering after 10–20 min despite good FPS – anyone else?

Hello everyone,

this is my first post on this forum so please let me know if I’m doing anything wrong.

I’ve been playing MSFS 2020 for years, and recently I started testing MSFS 2024. Unfortunately, my experience so far has been pretty frustrating. Yes, the graphics are nicer, but performance and stability feel worse than in the 2020 version. The UI is clunky, the career mode breaks constantly, and even simple VFR flying becomes unplayable for me after about 15 minutes — which is the reason for this post.

After roughly 10–20 minutes of flying, the sim suddenly starts freezing in short bursts. My FPS is still technically between 30–60, but the frame-time spikes make the game stutter so badly that it becomes unflyable. The issue stays even if I go back to the main menu, and it only disappears if I restart the sim completely. I recorded the problem on my phone in case anyone wants to see it.

If anyone is now thinking that my CPU or GPU is running too hot and therefore throttling down—no, unfortunately (or fortunately) that is not the case.

This never happens in MSFS 2020 on the exact same system and settings. Every other game I own runs perfectly fine.

To rule out hardware issues, I monitored the system with HWiNFO and the MSFS Developer Mode FPS overlay. CPU, GPU, RAM, temperatures — all normal. However, when the stutters appear, the Manipulators thread and CoherentGTUIThread in the Dev Mode graph spike up to 80–100 ms, sometimes the MainThread too. That normally only happens when something inside the sim engine is blocking multiple threads at once, which makes me suspect a bug rather than a hardware bottleneck.

So before I go insane:
Is anyone else experiencing this? Does this look like a known MSFS 2024 bug, or could this still be something on my end?

Graphics settings
Medium preset
TLOD 200, OLOD 100
2560×1440p
NVIDIA DLSS set to “Automatic”
DLSS Frame Generation: Enabled (most of the time; I’ve tried disabling FG when the bug occurs but unfortunately thats not the solution)

My system
ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4070 Ti OC Edition

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X (Auto OC, Curve Optimizer –10)

32 GB DDR4 3200 MHz

MSI MAG A750GL 750 W 80+ Gold PSU

Game installed on an NVMe SSD

250 Mbit/s DSL connection (connected via Cat. 7 LAN cable)

If you need more details or want screenshots of the Dev Mode graphs, I can upload them.
Any ideas, similar experiences, or potential fixes are very welcome. Thanks in advance!

There are a couple known issues that could be at play here, the most likely is this existing report:
https://forums.flightsimulator.com/t/main-thread-loads-up-more-and-more-and-doesnt-recover/729018

This is located in the Bug Reports Category, under Install, Performance & Graphics.
You may want to browse through that section for others that may apply.

A fix for this is in the beta test currently underway, so some measure of relief will come when that is released to the public.

Thanks for the tips! Fortunately, I no longer had this bug after the latest NVIDIA driver update to 581.80, and the game has been running much better and smoother than ever since!
