MSFS 2024 won't run on Intel Mac: Shader Model 6.7 required (only 6.6 supported)

Dear all,

I know that MSFS 2024 is most likely considered “unsupported” anyway on Intel Macs (running Windows 10 natively), but as MSFS 2020 was running relatively smoothly (on an Intel iMac 27" 2020 with 32 GB RAM, AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT with 32 GB VRAM) I was expecting the same for MSFS 2024, at least as far as “runnability” was concerned.

But lo and behold, MSFS 2024 won’t even start! Shortly after launching it from Steam I get the following error message:

“Shader Model 6.7 is not supported by this device! Maximum Shader Model supported is 6.6”

The official AMD “Boot Camp driver” is version 21.30.45.18 from 28.07.2023 and is unlikely of being upgraded.

Bummer! I just asked for a refund. Unless someone figures out an alternative way to upgrade the AMD driver (or I will purchase a PC - but this won’t happen anytime soon) :frowning:

So just as a heads up for my fellow Mac users.

I hope you will find the solution, same problem here with my PC

Hey,
I use an NVIDIA graphics card if that makes any difference -
I just wanted to say that possibly updating your drivers and maybe your windows might do the trick?
It worked for me literally the moment I got this error.
Let me know if it works!

I updated my videocard that worked for me

@Steeler2340 I know your feelings  On an iMac Pro… Here’s the way to update to newer drivers for bootcamped Macs: search for “amd vegas update bootcamp reddit” on Google, and you’ll get the reddit post. Sorry, I’m not allowed to integrate the direct link here

Same problem
iMac Mid 2020 with AMD GPU 8GB RAM64GB and DriectX12 installed

@Macalflyer On reddit there is the solution, to update Radeon with/for Bootcamp. But I can’t post the direct link. Via Google you’re directed in the first post to the solution

I got exactly the same problem. Hopefully we get a solution!

Same issue here. I have the AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT and using the driver on the iMac it says it’s running the latest version. I tried downloading a driver from the AMD website but it doesn’t recognize the graphics card. I am not sure which reddit page is referred to. I found one from 3 months ago with “update to latest AMD drivers?” But it doesn’t seem to me there is a solution in there. Is this the right reddit page? And has anyone already fixed the issue?

Hi, I managed to install the newest driver manually following a guide found on the net:

Step 0: Create a System Restore point just in case something goes horribly wrong.

Step 1: Download the latest Radeon drivers for the 5700xt from the AMD website

Step 2: Launch the downloaded .exe file. It should end up failing and giving you an error that your hardware is not compatible. That’s fine. What this step does is uncompressing the driver to your C:\AMD folder.

Step 3: In Windows, open Device Manager, and under ‘Display adapters’, right-click ‘AMD Radeon Graphics’ and select ‘Update Driver’.

Step 4: In the pop up that appears, select ‘Browse my computer for drivers’, then choose ‘Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer’, and then click the ‘Have Disk…’ button.

Step 5: Click Browse, then navigate to the extracted driver .INF file which is located in C:\AMD\AMD-Software-Installer\Packages\Drivers\Display\WT6A_INF. Select the only INF file in this directory (it should be called something like u0394204.INF though this file name could change with future drivers. Select the INF file, and click OK.

Step 6: In the list of Models that appear, select the right card, and click Next. The display should flicker a few times. Wait until you get a message that says the driver is successfully installed. You can now close Device Manager.

With the newest driver the game is starting without this error on my 2020 iMac with 5700xt 16gb.

I hope this will help you  :four_leaf_clover:

Thanks for confirming this. In fact, I stumbled over very similar (same) instructions during my research, too.

Can you tell us a bit more about your experience?

  • Is your display “stable” (that is, no other noticeable “side-effects” such as “blue screens”, flickers or performance degradations)?
  • I assume the official AMD Radeon control center software does not work anymore (and as such you cannot do any settings therein anymore) - can you confirm this? (*)

(*) This would be a pity, but no show stopper - for as long as the driver runs stable by itself

To summarise:

  • The problem is that the official “boot camp driver” (= the driver that is developed by AMD, for Apple’s “boot camp” Windows setup) is not supporting the required “Shader Model 6.7”: https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/release-notes/Apple-Boot-Camp.html
  • The latest offiicial AMD driver (specifically for “Windows on Intel Macs” has received its last update in 2023 (for iMac 2020 / Radeon 5700 XT anyway) and is at version 21.30.45.18 and very unlikely to receive any further updates (by either AMD or Apple); it is only providing “Shader Model 6.6”
  • The official AMD “Windows on PC” driver has been updated since and does implement the “Shader Model 6.7” (latest is 6.8, I believe), but that driver cannot be installed on “Windows on Mac”, as described by the previous poster: https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/drivers.html
  • However the actual driver can be installed (as described in the previous post), but at the risk of breaking things / less stability / less performance, as this driver is not officially supported for “Windows on Mac”

Here’s my feedback on this “Shader Model” 6.7 problem.
Being away from my PC, I’m only using my laptop at the moment (Lenovo L340-17IRH-Gaming/8gb memory/512MB SSD disk/Nvidia GE Force GTX 1050 card). I updated the card with the latest compatible drivers (566.14) from the Nvidia site and launched the game (PD2024) via the Store. As my RAM is too small, I increased the virtual RAM in W11. At first, everything went well and XBox congratulated me, telling me that my configuration suited them well, which surprised me, but well… As my RAM and virtual memory were low, everything took a long time to load and my computer started to make an airplane noise, but it held. Also, my bandwidth is awful where I am, which annoys FS, who tell me it’s no good, it’s going to take a while etc…
I’m happy knowing that this is really a test before I get my PC back.
The first time I restart the computer, I get a BSOD, not a blue screen but a black one. Windows launches, there’s the little welcome sound, but the screen is black, no display. After two days of struggle and anguish, here’s a sort of solution to get MSFS24 working without the Shade Model 6.7 (I’m at 6.5).

The manufacturer’s website doesn’t show any new drivers and tells me that my drivers are up to date, which is obviously not the case (11/20/2020) and so I can’t launch the game. Downloading the latest drivers goes well and they install correctly…yes but no.
In fact, as long as the computer hasn’t been restarted, you can enjoy the famous 6.7, although the “DX Caps Viewer” says otherwise. Once switched off…BlackSOD.
Solution for me:
1-Download drivers from Nvidia.
2-Install the drivers and choose express installation.
3-DO NOT turn off/restart the computer after installation.
4-Launch the game and play
5- When you’re done with the game, leave your computer running, but you’ll have to shut it down at some point.
6-Restart in Safe Mode (procedure varies from computer to computer…)
7-Search and go to the “Device Manager”.
8-Select your Graphics Card, the Driver tab, “update”, “browse my workstation…”, choose from a list of drivers on my computer” and select the Drivers before those recently installed. Windows reinstalls them and you can then restart the computer and the display returns to normal.
9- When you want to play again, then start again from 2 because you’ve kept the download…
Perhaps this solution can help you, depending on your configuration…
EDIT:
Much faster and less restrictive: Up to phase 4 OK but after playing or before shutting down the computer go to Device Manager and select the initial drivers for later reboot. Then simply reselect the “modern” drivers to play again.

MSFS2020 runs smooth.
MSFS2024 no driver with shader model 6.7 :frowning:

You do realise that this thread is specifically about “Flight Simulator on Mac” - as prominently mentioned in the title and opening thread?

But good to know that PC users suffer similarly (even with nVidia cards - I can’t remember when the last nVidia card has been used - by Apple - in a Mac though ;))

But at least you have a good chance of getting regular driver updates, whereas we Mac users are officially stuck with what is called “boot camp drivers” aka “specific drivers for Windows on Mac”.

And note that the AMD GPUs built into Macs might have Mac-specific hardware / firmware settings that make them ever so slightliy different from their PC counterparts, let alone the Mac-specific firmware etc. - hence the problem of not being able to simply install the “normal” AMD GPU drivers on “Windows on Mac”.

But again, as outlined in a previous post this is possible, with some manual workarounds and a possibly slightly non-stable driver experience and quite likely non-working AMD “control center” software etc.

Thanks anyway for your insights - happy flying

Anyone else on Mac getting a DirectX error? Prevents startup altogether.

“Impossible to create DirectX12 device - Error 0x887a0004(DXGI_ERROR_UNSUPPORTED)”

I’ve confirmed in DirectXDiag I’m updated and running DX12 along with updated drivers. Any help would be appreciated!

Hey everyone, has anyone managed to solve this issue in the meantime? I’m considering buying a gaming PC and connecting it to my iMac Pro as a monitor. However, I’ve heard that this isn’t a straightforward plug-and-play solution since Apple removed the HDMI input…

Hey all! For MacBook Pro 2019 on AMD Radeon Pro 5500M - use RED driver from bootcampdrivers website. It is called: W11-Radeon-Software-Adrenalin-Oct23-BootCamp-Red-Edition. After installing this MSFS 2024 will work just like a charm, TESTED!

MSFS2024 no driver with shader model 6.7 :frowning:

Solutions above as posted do not work

The official AMD “Boot Camp driver” is version 21.30.45.21 from 07.11.2024

Looks like Microsoft “forgot” to mention you will need RTX 30XX or 40XX to run MSFS2024

No, that is not the problem, see above: it is a BootCamp / AMD driver issue not supporting a specific Direct3D / Shader Model feature set.

And I even have a 5700 AMD card … again, Microsoft did not „forget to mention“ anything.
