MSFS Application Error - memory could not be read

Microsoft will explain how to far better than I can in a forum …

With the Fenix A320 I had for all flights the CTD, now flew the third trip with PMDG 737 and no CTD

I had this with the PMDG and the FBW as well and I just had another crash with the Fenix. People have it with default aircraft as well. It is an MSFS problem and they have to fix it. Tons of people have this problem, all with different or nor addons and with widely different hardware.

Hey guys first post here, was dealing with the same “Memory could not be read” issue on a fresh vanilla install last night. Game would CTD within a minute or two every time no matter the settings in flight.Tried all the virtual memory fixes with no avail. Tried clearing the cache/folder. Turned all settings to low, turned max FPS to 30, nothing worked.

Only fix so far seems to be switching from dx11 to Dx12 beta. Haven’t gotten the error yet but I will keep you guys updated if I do.

Computer specs are
i9900k
1070ti
32gb ddr4

Asobo we have a memory management problem. Well that’s a start in the right direction. Hate to break it to you Asobo it is not due to the Top Gun release. This has been happening way before that. Look at the 500+ Posts on here. Admitting you have a problem is the first step towards recovery. Fingers crossed hotfix coming soon!

I still get the crashes even with DX12 beta enabled. DX11 or DX12 doesn’t seem to make a difference for me.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?

Provide extra information to complete the original description of the issue:

If relevant, provide additional screenshots/video:

I am having the same issue during any flight. CTD any time with same or very similat Read/Write error.,. Just started using new PC with windows 11. So everything is fresh install. Only crashes with the same error using MSFS 2020. Memory Ram checked OK. Trierd with comminity File in full use or with default setup. Changed periphirals made no difference.
Need help as this has ruined a very expensive upgrade to a new PC. Used Win 10 previuosly with no errors.

I had a flight for 3.5 hours yesterday with PMDG 737 and did not have the error. It is pretty random and very hard to determine what is causing it.

I changed to using the latest Nvidia Studio drivers (from the latest Game Ready drivers) and I got less crashes. It still crashes - but much less often. I was actually able to fly longer than 5 minutes which is a first for a long time

Not sure if anyone else gets similar results?

This is 100% right. Three separate Windows updates reset the sound settings/configuration in Windows. After each update I needed to go into the sound settings and make sure the output device was NOT the MB mixer device and was the actual output device – in my case, the LG monitor. Each time it solved the “Memory Read Error” CTD.

I do not have the Fenix, but I assume it uses WASM, so currently crashes due to invalid memory pointers cannot be caught my normal accepted Exception Handling Processing ?? (or has that changed recently ??)

Yes yes matching the correct audio devices in windows and the sim has greatly reduce my CTD. Thanks for coming up with that fix!
One other thing that came to mind in another forum is perhaps we will need to install MSFS on a separate drive that is not married to the same drive with windows. Put MSFS as a stand alone with no other programs. Memory errors was a problem in the early FSX days and the separate drive fixed most of FSX problems. Just throwing it out there.

I got this error all second fly. Yesterday this error come again BUT I was able to still flying. All works. I just pushed the window into a corner so it wouldn’t be in the way. But I was able to continue flying without it freezing. But the most flights its crash. What can I say. Other buddies never have this bug!

Turn off game mode in windows 10 settings and reboot the system, it helped me!

I have heard that. How are there so many flying without this error? What is different with our systems than everyone else? We all have different hardware setups so the fact we are getting these error is crazy to me.

I can also fly without problems if I do not make flights over 3 hours
the others who have no problems may only fly VR and never make long flights
at the moment i am testing with the Nvidia Studio driver 512.96 with the PMDG 737 it seems to work without problems i have finished a flight with a stopover of 6 hrs without problems
I am now testing the Fenix A320 see if that works ?
until now everything io between stop in Gibraltar after 03.37 flight timez no problem now continue to Zurich
2 flight section without problems it seems fixed for me at the moment
these are my graphics settings maybe this helps someone are unfortunately in German

what has solved the problem I can unfortunately also not say exactly
on my side i have no more problems i could make flights of more than 7 hours without errors

Worth noting that since that last comment I did in fact have this memory exception crash even with manually matched audio devices. Was 100% sure this time they were matched. But the frequency has certainly greatly reduced so it’s still worth trying, doesn’t cost the user anything.
