This is called a “crash to desktop” or CTD, and there are a LOT of potential causes for this. There’s a troubleshooting guide here, but after a lot of time spent on installs/reinstalls and a bunch of other really involved procedures, I think I’m just going to put up with it for nowand hope that Asobo comes up with some fixes in a future update.
