Msfs won't start since going from DX12 to DX11

That’s one thing I miss about my Xbox X, there was something freeing about not having to worry about whether your drivers were updated or they were buggy, or just the hassle of getting your display settings right. And the resume function was great. It was a really freeing experience. And 2020 really ran great on it. That being said, my PC blows it away and I would never go back to it haha.

I’ve only noticed the CTD after switching from DirectX 11 to 12 then back and only after shutting down/restarting the sim. My suggestion for anyone would be install the drivers and leave it in DirectX 11.

You’re experiencing a completely different issue than the one discussed in this thread. This topic is from February, while your problem appeared after the SU16 update, which should already suggest that it’s a different bug. What I recommended is still valid and currently the only effective workaround.

My issue is related to the NVIDIA issue that’s been plaguing the app users. I also now know it will occur even without the use of the app. My issue was very similar to the OPs issue when I first experienced it.

But how can i update my driver after deleting Nvidia App?

You just need to check the NVIDIA website for any new driver updates.
Download The Official NVIDIA Drivers | NVIDIA

Thanks, I’ll check it out

You’re welcome.

We already have a forum topic about this bug - CTD during MSFS 2020 loading. Here’s the link to the thread:

There’s currently a workaround available and even several of them.

Before trying any workaround, please make sure to participate in the linked thread to confirm you’re also affected by this bug.

Here come the workarounds (click to expand)

Until Nvidia fixes the application and Asobo MSFS 2020 please check what happens if you select DX12 instead of DX11 by manually editing cfg file.

To do this, you need to edit usercfg.opt file and modify the line
PreferD3D12 0

Change the number 0 to 1

and save the changes.

OR

If you need Nvidia app also select DX12

OR

If you need NVIDIA app and want to play with DX11, delete NGX folder - you’ll find it in C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA.

OR
If you don’t need NVIDIA app and want to play with DX11, uninstall NVIDIA app and then restart PC.

Thank you so so much!!! I was pulling my hair out. I deleted all the caches, config files, pulled every Nvidia driver off and clean installed using DDU, ran DirectX Runtime Installer - nothing was working.. and then came across this post and just deleted the Nvidia app: problem solved. Can’t believe the one app was the culprit.

You’re welcome.

Fly safe.

There is easy fix, just do a DDU and it works

Hey guys, I tried all steps, removed my drivers with DDU and reinstalled the latest Nvidia drivers without the App. However I cannot get the game to start with DX11. It crashed each time.

You need to edit usercfg.opt file and modify the line

Change the number 0 to 1

and save the changes.

Thank you for sharing this, I was lost in limbo for a sec!
