MSFS2020 and DLSS 4 (VR user)

Hello

As I hate MSFS2024 for VR (too many bugs, and unusable since SIM UPDATE 1 because it is more laggy than before, even with my good PC which includes 64Go RAM, i9, 4090), I need to go back to MSFS 2020.
But once you have tried DLSS 4 on MSFS2024, which gives a very sharp picture in my Quest 3, it is difficult to revert back to the little bit blurry picture of MSFS 2020.

Here is my question:
using DLSS swapper, I selected the very last DLSS 4 release for MSFS 2020, but I do not feel any effect in the sharpness of the picture in my Quest 3. I don’t see no difference with DLSS 3.
Should DLSS Swapper, while DLSS 4 selected, give a sharper display in VR in MSFS 2020 ?
What could be the reason why I cannot get a picture as sharp in MSFS 2020 as MSFS 2024 ?

Thanks !

The way I am currently using DLSS 4 Preset K with 2020 and 2024 and my Quest3 is with the latest nVidia driver clean installed, NO nVidia app, NO DLSS Swapper, and just the latest nVidia Inspector with the following settings changed once on the global profile.

If you want, you can verify that is working properly in MSFS by doing what is suggested here, but it does work regardless.

Thanks, but I already tried with no DLSS SWAPPER, just using the original Nvidia software with your presets, and that’s the same result : the picture is not as sharp as with MSFS 2024 and DLSS 4. I can see a difference of smoothness while using DLSS4 and MSFS2020, but nothing about sharpness. I don’t understand why. I really cannot go back to 2020 since I tried the new sharpness of 2024 …

Many thanks for this mate. This worked perfectly with msfs2020 (2024 uninstalled and waiting for better VR performance).

What’s worked best for me is to use DDU to fully uninstall previous drivers, then custom/clean install the current driver (without nvidia app), then use nvidia control panel to setup my usual global and app specific 3D settings, then use nvidia profile inspector (latest final version) to set the global dlss settings as per the following the OP’s nvidia profile inspector Global settings.

I’ve also checked this with the dlss inspection thing and it’s all good. Doesn’t matter what dlss files are in your msfs2020 folder. These won’t be used, just the latest nvidia ones associated with your nvidia driver (now 572.83 in my case).

Soooo much better than YouTubers explaining all the sods and mods you need to do to get dlss4 working. So, now all I need is to just do clean custom install without the nvidia app and just use nvidia profile inspector. Nice and simple, just how I like it, lol! Cheers.

Where are you getting your CustomSettingNames.xml from, for NVPI?
Your structure doesn’t match mine at all, and I’m missing some of your options.
Is there reliable source for this file, because I’ve seen multiple ones and they are all different.

Update: ah, I see. You’re not using one at all, the latest version of NVPI has them in it by default. No problem.

So now that you have DLSS 4 working with MSFS 2020, do you have a sharper screen in your Quest or not ? Because with MSFS 2024, the difference is huge, the plane dashboard is now perfectly sharp (very visible with the Cessna 152 where you don’t need anymore to get close from the dashboard to read any text).

Yes, both outside and cockpit clarity are significantly better. I still apply 1.3x pixel density (ODT/OTT) and still use dlss/balanced. Ghosting is also 99% gone now. For example, I no longer see ghosting of building top edges, and there is far less cockpit instrument gauge blurring.

Kinda strange that you’ve said previously that you saw a lot of dlss4 improvements with 2024, but not so much with 2020. I’m not sure why that would be the case. I haven’t reinstalled 2024 yet so I can’t check that out.

Like everything VR, once you get an improvement like dlss4, you always want more, lol! Cheers.

Thank you, I will try this when I get some time, now that DLSS 4 is supported in the latest SU2 beta.
I have the nvidia app currently installed, but don’t really use it apart for new driver installs, but even that has been a bit rough of late. So I will uninstall it and see how I go.

I checked (using the registry trick) and I can confirm that my MSFS 2020 is using DLSS 4. I tried with DLSS swapper, and the NVidia app, but I can confirm that the screen sharpness is lower in MSFS 2020 than in MSFS 2024. I tried to play with every MSFS 2020 settings (going upto “ultra” everywhere), but definitely I cannot get the same sharpness as with MSFS 2024. This is an issue for me as for now, MSFS 2024 is only barely usable in VR (many many bugs, many issues with the Quest 3 controllers, and the FPS in VR are lower than in MSFS 2020), but now I know that I will have to live with it unfortunatly …

Note : there is something interesting for you guys, I have found that the sharpness is a lot better in MSFS 2024, but this only occurs if I use DLSS Swapper. Using only the NVidia app will not give me this perfect sharpness.

Just trying these settings, downloaded latest inspector version, but there is one setting I can’t find and that is DLSS-FG Forced preset letter.

If you read the release notes about the latest version it tells you.

  • Settings: replaced misnamed DLSS-FG - Forced Preset Letter with DLSS-FG - Private Flags, named extra DLSS-FG flag settings.

That parm is now in 8-Extra.

Thanks, I tried an earlier release before I saw your post and got it all working along with using latest in nvidia app.

Maybe we can just use the nvidia app eventually, some seem to suggest you can, but I didn’t have any success.
