MSFS2020 and my GPU Fans

Good afternoon,

Could I please get some help with my GPU fan revving up every 10secs only when I’m in MSFS2020 no other games? Please see attached specs and before judging on my specs my wife picked out this PC by herself as a gift for me. But looking to calm down the GPU fan from every 10 secs while in this game from revving up temp reaches 85 degrees once signed out of the game temp drops immediately to like around 60 degrees etc.? Any help would be appreciated. TIA.

That’s pretty normal. Your PC looks pretty good, I think she’s done a good job. When the card is getting heavily used it will get hot and the fans will speed up, and make noise. I’ve seen it happen on some boards where the system fans also speed up disproportionately and they are usually what makes the noise. Are you sure it’s just the GPU fans making the noise?

One thing to add is that I don’t think MSFS (or indeed many games these days) can make use of SLi. You might find you get just as good performance and half the heat from running with just one card. The other should fetch a pretty penny on eBay.

Yes it is the GPU fan, just so annoying. I have people tell me to use something called Afterburner, but you say its normal for this game?

Can disconnect the SLI in windows? And also I have 2 1440p 27 inch monitors would I still be able to use the monitors only having 1 card?

I’d say it’s normal for any graphics intensive game. My old 1070 used to sound like concord taking off in P3Dv3

Hello,
I moved this to PC & Hardware.

You’d have to remove the card physically. But yes, you can easily run 2 or more monitors. There will be at least three outputs on one 2070 card. You just connect both monitors to the same card.

How much would 1 of my cards go for price if to sell one?

I run a single 3090 and MSFS gets it revved either up as soon as the first loading graphics appear.

Pretty normal.

I got £400 for a 2070 8Gb, I think the 2080’s are going for 500-600 without the original box, maybe more

Could you tell me your temps because mine is hitting around 84 to 85 degrees? Then as soon as I jump out of the game it goes straight down to like in the 60s?

My fan does the same thing – revs up constantly but only with MSFS. My best advice is simply to pretend that the fan noise is aircraft engine noise. My fan actually blows directly in my face, like the wind effect of an old-time flying ace with a cap and scarf and goggles. Maybe Asobo programmed it this way to enhance sound effects and realism

Mine sits around 70 pretty consistently with everything maxed out.

It’s an Alienware and they aren’t known for being efficient cooling machines.

So should I consider that temp normal? And if I disconnect the SLI within Nvidia settings for the second card would that help or would I have to take the 2nd card physically out?

As mentioned above, there is virtually no value to SLI in any game these days and none in MSFS. Used 2080ti’s list for between $800-$1100 usd on ebay. No problem hooking up multiple monitors to a single 2080ti. These cards run pretty warm by nature and having two of them side by side undoubtedly makes the heating issue worse.

I would remove one of the cards and sell it. If you don’t already have it, dowload a free app GPU-Z that will tell you exactly what is going on with the card in terms of temps, power usage, fan speeds etc. If you find you do have and issue, you can decide what to do from there.

My 2080ti, in a case not known for good cooling, will run at a max of 84C (limited by the manufacturers settings) when in MSFS. Using controls provided by the maker, I set “Performance Cooling” which ramps up the fans to a steady high speed and lowers the temp to about 80C that I find acceptable. My card runs at about 60C when not under load.

I currently run 2 monitors, a 49" 1440p widescreen and a 27" 1080p. I run the sim limited to 30fps with all Ultra settings.

So, try the system with one card, do some testing and perhaps consider one of the apps that will allow you make up some custom fan curves.
