MSFS2020 crash on launch due to "E658703.dll"

For several weeks, I’ve noticed that several NVIDIA DLLs consistently cause MSFS 20 to crash.

These are the “1B0_E658703.dll” DLLs located in the C:\ProgramData\NVIDIA\NGX\models folder (see screenshot).

According to the reliability log, I get this after each crash:

There is a solution to avoid the crash: delete the entire NGX folder. The problem is that this solution becomes cumbersome because I have to do it first. every launch…

I’m currently on NVIDIA graphics driver version 580.88. I’ve had the same problem for several versions.

I’ve already tried the DDU method, but nothing works. I don’t know if the problem is MSFS 20 or the NVIDIA drivers. I think it’s a DLSS issue, but strangely, I have absolutely no issues with other games that use DLSS.

Has anyone encountered this problem and managed to work around it without having to delete the NGX folder each time?

Please check what happens if you select DX12 instead of DX11 by manually editing cfg file.

To do this, you need to edit usercfg.opt file and modify the line
PreferD3D12 0

Change the number 0 to 1

and save the changes.

OR
Uninstall NVIDIA app and restart PC

OR

If you need Nvidia app, optimize MSFS 2020.

OR

If Nvidia app installed go to:
c:\ProgramData\NVIDIA
delete folder named NGX

HI - which of the fix options did you use please - the DX12 User cfg edit?

Edit usercfg.opt

Just wanted to say thanks! I really didn’t want to mess around with deleting Nvidia files, which is the solution that is shared pretty much everywhere, but changing the config file worked!

You’re welcome.

Ran into this same problem after I specifically wanted to run in DX11 mode. When I changed in-game graphics settings to DX11 and restarted, MSFS 2020 was crashing with this error on this .dll file.

When I made the change to the .opt file, MSFS2020 will run again, but it’s in DX12 mode.

How do I get the game to run in DX11 mode without it crashing?

Download NVIDIA driver ver. 566.14
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/results/235934/

Uninstall NVIDIA app.
Uninstall NVIDIA driver via DDU in Windows Safe Mode.

If you need help for using DDU, check this GUIDE

Install 566.14

I haven’t updated the Nvidia driver but I have been getting CTDs today. I loaded the sim in New Zealand South Island and it crashed. Then I re-loaded again in Australia and it was a CTD before the flight could load. The third time it occurred in Papau New Guinea.

Where should I report this?

I have installed MSFS2020 on a new PC with Nvidia 4070 Ti but it crashed on loading. Reinstalled twice but no change. I just saw and used your Instruction to change the Dx mode and it’s loaded beautifully. Thankyou so much. A great help and it was easy to do.
