MSFS2020 CTD 50% Through Load

August 3rd, 2025 @ 16:21Z

Anyone else experiencing CTD when loading MSFS2020? Get to about 50% loaded and CTD. Repeated 4 times now (with empty community folder, reboot, etc…).

Nothing changed (on my end) since yesterdays flights which were flawless.

EDIT

Also renamed my UserConf and EXE files so they created fresh and not loading FSUIPC, etc…

Same issue.

Seems to be resolved, I reverted back to previous nVidia Driver, I had updated yesterday but had flown multiple times without issue.

Re-installed latest, and still CTD.

Reverted to previous and starts without issue now.

Is it the “device hung error”? If so, the newest 2 drivers also cause this for me. And it only happens with DX11. 572.83 doesn’t cause the error, that much is certain.

I know CTD is resolved, but I’m curious
Did Event Viewer point to any specific file?
How did you install NVIDIA driver?
Did you join PC Gaming in the Xbox Insider Hub?

Nothing related to Nvidia. Just the classic MSFS error.

No not with insider, just downloaded GRD from nVidia like I always do.

Seems like first launch after the install is fine. It’s the subsequent that would crash.

How did you install NVIDIA driver?

Originally just using the GRD exe. Second attempt did a DDU.

I’m a bit puzzled by your CTD, because if I remember correctly, we have a pretty similar hardware setup. I just don’t recall what GPU you have – I’m on an RTX 4090.

One key difference, though, is that I have the NVIDIA app installed, which you mentioned you didn’t. My MSFS 2020 is running in DX11 mode and during my testing I didn’t experience any CTDs while loading. For what it’s worth, in the NVIDIA app I’ve disabled the in-game overlay and I haven’t optimized any games – I just installed the app for testing purposes.

Everything the same other than GPU (5080).

FYI, actually, it turns out NVIDIA still hasn’t fixed the crash that’s been plaguing us for the past six months. The CTD during loading in MSFS 2020 is still happening when using DX11 and the NVIDIA app is installed.

Just to clarify - I did not use the “Optimize” option for MSFS 2020 in the NVIDIA app. Despite that, the crash still happens during loading when using DX11 and having the NVIDIA app installed, even with driver version 580.88.

I’m seriously considering opening a proper bug thread, but … maybe it would carry more weight if you posted it? You know what I mean - you’re a moderator, more people pay attention when you speak up.

just happened to me

I have a clean 2020 install and i CTD half way through boot up, latest Nvidia driver with Nvidia app installed. 5090

Drop back one version of the nVidia Driver and don’t install the app.

With Nvidia driver 572.16/572.42/47/60,70,83, 576.xx and latest, Nvidia app and DX12 selected in MSFS 2020 a CTD won’t occur.

However, with DX11 selected in MSFS 2020, using the same latest Nvidia driver and Nvidia app, a CTD will occur.

Until Nvidia fixes the application and Asobo MSFS 2020 please check what happens if you select DX12 instead of DX11 by manually editing cfg file.

To do this, you need to edit usercfg.opt file and modify the line
PreferD3D12 0

Change the number 0 to 1

and save the changes.

OR

If you need Nvidia app, optimize MSFS 2020.

OR

If Nvidia app installed go to:
c:\ProgramData\NVIDIA
delete folder named NGX

OR

Uninstall NVIDIA app

The only time I had an issue with the NVIDIA app is after switching from DirectX 11 to 12 then back. Then the sim would CTD when starting. I was using a 4060 then but now I have a 5060ti OC and am using the 580.99 drivers (No NVIDIA app).

NVIDIA has been dropping the ball with driver quality lately. The SOP with NVIDIA and driver team should be as follows once confirmed a driver is the issue…

No one goes home until the driver issue is corrected. No exceptions.

Thank you for this, I simply optimised 2020 in Nvidia app ( something I wouldn’t normally do as I only for vr), and it up and running :+1:

You’re welcome.

Optimization of MSFS 2020 in the NVIDIA app changed, among other things, DX 11 to DX 12, which is why you’re no longer getting CTDs during loading.

You can disable optimizationd and go back to your previous settings by manually adjusting the settings directly in MSFS - just don’t switch DX12 back to DX11. Everything else can be changed as you prefer.
