MSFS2024 - GPU Usage Spike/Low performance when looking in certain direction

Hello all,

I am encountering a frustrating issue with 2024 at the moment, in which the performance seems to drop significantly when looking in one specific direction. I’ve attached a video below that hopefully demonstrates the issue.

Effectively, FPS/performance is fine, expect when you pan the camera to look in direction (in this case north). looking straight out of the flight deck and when looking south off the left wing there are no issues, however, you when you move to the right wing, the FPS drops and GPU usage spikes. The direction seems to be random on each occasion (maybe dependent on time of day?), you can see when you pan the camera in the flight deck where the drop occurs, and then it picks up again when you look away.

This happens across all aircraft in the simulator, and all locations. In the video below, I was over the ocean with no terrain loaded in, so I don’t think it is dropping because there is something being loaded in (i.e clouds, airports, buildings, etc.). I have had the issue occur with completely clear skies and nothing loaded on the ground, simply looking in one direction impacts the performance. To support this, I have sometimes had higher performance looking at more densely populated areas vs. away from them (ex. looking directly at a city or airport when in the air has higher FPS than when I look away.)

I’ve noticed the GPU usage spikes to 100% when the FPS drops, when it usually sits at around 80-85% otherwise.

Any ideas?

Sorry, but upon closer inspection, you’re using a 3070 card for 4K, which is asking too much of your hardware, especially using TAA. It’s actually an inferior card for a high resolution. And of course, you’re also lacking video memory! Try configuring it for better performance, reduce the graphics settings and other things. We can’t expect 4K performance from a 3070 card if the VRAM isn’t there to help; it’s very limited!

First of all, your RTX 3070 is not meant for 4K gaming. You should switch the resolution to Full HD and lower the other graphics settings as well. Even an RTX 4090 can struggle in 4K in MSFS depending on the settings - your GPU just isn’t powerful enough for 4K in this sim.

What if the monitor is native 4k?

Lowering the output resolution in the sims graphical settings I presume you mean, I think I tried this once and the image looked quite rough.

I also have a 4K monitor. My 4070S doesn’t allow very high settings without going below 60FPS. I am always main thread limited (i7-9700). Would lower resolution help me get 60 FPS at higher settings?
