Thanks,
MSFS Team

I took the Goose for a spin and it seems still to be the least loved iniBuilds aircraft. While it flies still fine there are some things which I’d love to see fixed or improved:

  • the aircraft only features the “phone as an EFB”, with basic comms. It would be nice to see at least the default EFB here
  • exterior lights are broken: the landing light does not extend and the emissive texture is always on. The beacon light is completely gone and at least during day I cannot see any navlights despite they are in “on” position
  • still there is no all white paint available for painters. It would be nice to have one at least through the iniBuilds manager
  • personally I would love to see a simple retrofitted radio stack or GNS unit instead of the “phone” solution. This could be fitted onto a makeshift panel in between both halfs of the main panel like this:
  • ATC information is still not in place. On MSFS 2020 (not sure about 2024) the correct localization would have been
atc_type = "TT:ATCCOM.ATC_NAME GRUMMAN.0.text"
atc_model = "TT:ATCCOM.AC_MODEL G21.0.text"

If you love radials, this is the one! Wonderful module! Best water effects in the sim so far IMHO.

That they added a transponder and coms to this one is good, very good even. Sadly, like other iniBuilds aircraft, it doesn’t have the standard EFB.

What’s the point of a standardized EFB if aircraft were allowed to be excluded from using it? I will keep asking this until I get a real answer.

I feel like this is an aircraft which could be seriously useful and fun to use in the game, but the complete lack of exterior and interior options, no modern or optional avionics, the single boring livery, lack of compatibility with career mode, and the poor sound design and very poor engine sounds just make this plane immensely disappointing.

I was really hoping this plane was gonna get an improvement in FS2024 as it was one of my favourites in FSX. It’s a real shame it feels only half finished.

I mean, literally only 2 people have been here to vote other than me since the game was released.

Two bugs I noticed immediately when I loaded this aircraft:

  • Instrument light switches appear to be inop
  • lowering gear on water raises aircraft out of the water.

I find most instrument lights to not work in daytime in 2024, must be some kind of lighting bug in the sim and sadly it’s not a bug with the airplane that makes it rise out of the water, its the fact that the water in the sim is only 1 meter deep… This also happens with the Albatross.

I was rather disappointed with this aircraft. It is a very basic model that reminds me of what one would have expected to have seen in MSFS FSX. This feedback is based on the aircraft available in build v1.3.7.0 (SU1 Beta)

Flight Model and Aircraft Systems (3)

I don’t mind having an aircraft without all the latest systems - I actually enjoy flying historical aircraft without autopilots, etc. - but I do expect the systems that are modelled to be functional.

Here are a few examples of issues I came across:

  • There appears to be no elevator trim. If this is the trim wheel:

Then it is non-functional and so there is no way to determine the current trim value if changed by a keypress or controller button.

  • The manual states: “Some features of the aircraft, such as the old-style radio navigation are not functional due to those systems not existing in real world”.
OK, but many simmers enjoy recreating historical scenarios where such navigation is used, e.g.:
[Updated] Arrows Across America: fly the US Air Mail routes 1926 - 1934
So a working set would be beneficial to those trying to recreate flying in a bygone age.
However, since these radios are non-functional:

I’m not sure why they were included, rather than including a fully-functioning set of more modern equipment. There are a number of existing self-contained radio / avionics systems in the sim that could have been “pugged into” the cockpit with very little additional work involved.

  • Neither of the fuel gauges shows any fuel, making it impossible to determine (without using the EFB) fuel consumption during the flight. This screenshot shows a “full” fuel tank:

  • There appears to be no lighting in the cockpit at all. There are two rotary switches in the switch panel:

    But they are non-functional.
The lack of any lighting of the cockpit, gauges, switches or anything else makes night-flights impossible.

  • The manual references two cabin lights. The rear light is functional:

But the front cabin light is non-functional:

Interior and Exterior Graphics (3)

The exterior graphics are adequate, but not outstanding. There appear to be three bugs that I have not seen reported, and would asked to be repro’d by any user reading this.

The interior graphics are as basic as one can get.

Audio and Aircraft Sounds (3)

The sounds are also basic & inconsistent. For example, the light switches “click” with different sound intensities, varying from none to clearly audible (Nav lights)

I have never experienced the G-21A in real-life, so can only compare the sounds to those of the Goose in previous versions of MSFS. In this version, the engines from inside & outside the aircraft - sound “flat”. There is no reverberation that I associated with this type of engine.

Overall Enjoyment (4)

I would rate this as “Fair”. The cockpit interior needs a lot of improvement to make this aircraft one that I would fly on a regular basis. The Grumman HU16 aircraft are far better overall & outperform this goose in every category.

Elevator trim should be down to the right of the pilot’s seat base.

It’s a little can shaped device with a round trim indicator with trim values. It is operated via crank handle.

EDIT:

Yeah, this guy:

It’s a little weird the rudder trim is a solid color and not done correctly like the elevator trim unit.

I happened to have had the Goose loaded as the last aircraft I looked at for the above screenshots.

For my first attempt at VR in 2024, I just jumped into it for a flight.

It’s funny this VR thing, some of the aircraft translate really well to 3D space and some do not. I’d say, for the most part, the Goose does a great job at this, except for the “flavor” items throughout the cockpit.

The headphones hanging on the hook to the left and behind the pilot’s head are comically small, as are the Texaco cap and binoculars on the glare shield.

The other oddity I noted is the landing gear light is simply a translucent disk — presumably the lens — with no light housing to go with it.

Beyond those things, thus far, it works well in VR and, after turning off AMD Fluid Motion Frames (was causing graphic flicker and other artifact oddities), I’m surprised to find the experience working well for me.

@SmotheryVase665 in VR you can see the floating “ball” in the fuel gauge tubes in VR, but the fuel itself is invisible as in your screenshot above.

I’m a VR only guy. Yeah the hat and binoculars are a little small. The landing light is bugged in VR at least, you see the little light always lit on the wing, the cockpit switch just turns ON / OFF the emissive texture. Cockpit lighting would be nice for night flights, using the flashlight is less than ideal in VR… And CARB TEMP never moves, always at 20 if I remember right, and the CARB HEAT levers dont seem to do anything. Having the option to turn on at least a basic GPS would be nice for the longer flights.
Otherwise I have fun flying the thing, I’ve never tried the big radials version.

I want to love this airplane but cant.

The cabin door used to open but had a graphical glitch causing the inner and outer models to not move together. Their solution was to just remove the animation for it.

Like others have pointed out there is a rod sticking out of the wing.

I hate the flight model for this aircraft. I did in FS20 and its still bad in FS24. The rudder has no authority on the water and using differential thrust just pushes the plane forward and doesn’t turn it. The plane sits up in the water when you put the wheels down as do all the seaplanes in FS24.

The plane feels too heavy, and requires too much upward pitch during flight even with the flaps down.

The engines take too long to spool up and down.

The plane could really use more liveries. Here are some ideas.

The sounds are fine. Could use some pops and bangs when pulling back the throttle quickly.

The flight model of the plane is the worst aspect of it. I really wish they would show the Goose some love and attention.

It’s another neglected iniBuilds addon, just like all the others that don’t start with, “Airbus.”

I wish Big Radials would rebuild their Goose for FS24. The 2020 version works just fine, if I recall, but it could use some polishing.

Or at least a plain white one so that painters could create more.

I agree it’s really a shame. In comparison to other developers iniBuilds only touches their existing stuff whenever Microsoft asks them to do so it feels.
The Albatross on the other hand receives much love because Mike doesn’t just wait for MS to ask him to act, so I really don’t get the problem.

The Goose could be so incredibly good and (by utilizing the new capabilities of modular simobjects) feature many sub variants - either created by iniBuilds or by mod creators - but in it’s current state it’s just shameful.

I really hope something changes on this end.

Agreed, the standard excuse is that it’s a microsoft plane and therefore they decide everything. Like microsoft would refuse them from developing updates? But I guess inibuilds have more important things (for them anyways) on their minds.

Beautiful plane but having a sea plane with no way to water taxi is such a huge oversight and pretty much makes it worthless

It is coded as the real one is designed. The water simulation is down to MSFS interpretation of RW physics

What do you mean? Like a towboat?
