Thanks,
MSFS Team

I’ve got a pretty sizeable amount of hours in this plane in DCS, I trust their flight models much more than anything Asobo has put out. The 2024 version feels ridiculously overpowered, it feels almost like they just made a caricature for the flight model. It accelerates like crazy while at the same time it can drop that speed just as fast. The takeoffs I did with it have me drifting all over the runway because either the the engine torque is overdone or there’s something else going wrong. It is supposed to have torque on takeoff but given that I had set the takeoff rudder trim to account for it and it still started wildly drifting from side to side, something seems to be done incorrectly.

The plane seems to be a different model from the one in DCS, but I would still be skeptical of the performance it seems capable of. Also, the startup procedure seems pretty abbreviated, You can just immediately put the mixture control lever to run, put in some primer and do the starter. In DCS you have to put it in idle cutoff, use the starter and then when it kicks over move the mixture lever to run. I don’t know whether this is authentic to the 2024 model, but it is something I noticed.

why does the P-51A have roundels on both upper wings?

It would be great if the right wing control surfaces functioned.

Did a test flight in it today, encountered the same issue.

Tailwheel lock. If memory serves, that is stick all the way back on the real P-51. This is really helpful to keep it on the runway at the start of a takeoff. (Also an issue on the Asobo Pilatus Porter,)
Other than that I defer to hrabalisica, above. I have spent a lot of time on single-engine WW2-era fighters and attack planes in IL-2 Sturmovik, which has decent flight models although not DCS-level. The plane seems easier to fly than it should be, once you get it in the air.

Disclaimer: I’m not saying this is right or wrong, nor defending anything about how this aircraft performs. I’m simply making an observation.

Isn’t the P-51 we have in MSFS (the Microsoft/Asobo version) a racing aircraft taken from 2020’s Reno Air Races expansion?

If so, I’d expect its performance to not be characteristic of a P-51 in its original guise. From what I’ve read of racing-built aircraft, they can be pretty radically modified from their original design, both in airframe and engine performance.

The Porsche 911 in my garage performs nothing like the Porsche 911 that runs at Le Mans.

This is possible I suppose.

I did try the plane again and another thing I noticed is that wing stalls and entering spins feels dangerously easy to do. I don’t believe DCS has realtime CFD, but I also don’t know how well tuned the Asobo one is. It would almost feel more realistic to me if it didn’t feel so exaggerated.

They function, they just don’t animate.

The artificial horizon, heading indicator, altimeter and clock are too modern. Especially with the other period accurate gauges. The G-meter should be replaced with a period accurate VOR indicator.

It should at least look like this

Thats an old bird. The Asobo version is a modern racer. Lots of modern avionics to fit regulations/safty specs and save weight.
If it was a warbird we had id agree with you but the Asobo isnt a warbird its a “resto-mod” kind of plane for modern day flying not from rhe 1940s

But theres still gun ports for the M2 Brownings. Oh well.

Likely the plane they modeled had them. I don’t think it’s supposed to be a specific aircraft like most of the Reno racers.

Sometimes modelers are exceptionally accurate. In the last several Far Cry games the bullets you fire have the detonator pushed in as they’re sliding into your machine guns since, no doubt, they didn’t want live bullets laying around the offices. That’s what the modelers saw, so that’s what got into the game.

Quite a few problems.

  • Right side aileron doesn’t animate
  • Right side flap doesn’t animate
  • Rear/Fuselage fuel tank doesn’t have an needle on the fuel gauge.
  • Rear fuel tank’s gauge is very low res - seems forgotten.
  • The aircraft slips and slides left/right extremely easily. It feels like you’re flying on slush or ice. I’m no expert, but this doesn’t seem realistic.
  • Shouldn’t the aircraft have a meter for engine hours? Other racers do tho I can’t say if they all do.

Not a bug per se, but I’d really love it if the two lines in the config could be changed so that the PMS50’s GTN750 could control the autopilot since we can’t have access to those files. This wouldn’t affect people who don’t want to use AP and nothing in the aircraft would change visually.

Hi everyone,

I’m a big fan of the P-51 Mustang and was really excited to see it included as one of the default aircraft in MSFS2024. However, I’ve noticed a few issues that I think could use some improvement:

  1. Nose-heaviness during landing:
The aircraft feels way too nose-heavy by default, making landings nearly impossible. It tends to flip over onto its nose as soon as it touches down. As a workaround, I manually set the MAC to around 35% in the iPad, which allows for smoother landings, even a proper 3-point landing is then possible. I think the performance data needs some adjustments here.

  2. Ground handling:
The ground handling is still lacking refinement. Tight turns using differential braking are almost impossible—either the brakes lock up completely, or the plane keeps rolling straight ahead. This definitely needs improvement to allow for more realistic taxiing and ground maneuvers.

  3. Liveries:
The cockpit is quite well done overall, especially considering that some Mustangs nowadays feature display instruments. However, I would have loved to see a few more livery options for the aircraft to add variety to its usage.

I hope these issues get addressed. With a few tweaks, the P-51 could become an absolute joy to fly and one of the most popular planes in the sim!

Best regards

Perhaps try landing with no fuel in the fuselage tank behind the pilot?

SU1 XBOX X massively unstable in flight, zero inertia to any pitch or yaw and right aileron has no animation.

FYI, the North American P-51 Mustang is not listed in the SU1 Release Notes, so presumably did not have any changes made to it.

Correct no changes. But still very very broken.

It really could be a great 2024 aircraft when its been fixed.
Also Echo19’s P51 sound pack is compatible with the 2024,2020 and Aeroplane Heaven Mustangs, adds just that little bit more to your immersion
