MSFS2024 Random PC Shutdowns

I have a Ryzen 7800x3D with -20 undervolt and throttling temp set to 85. Before undervolting the temps were going above 90 and PC was shutting down. Now I stabilized the temperature of the CPU, it’s about 75C in MSFS2024. However, my PC can shut down randomly without an obvious reason.

My specs:
MSI X670E GAMING PLUS WIFI
7800x3D + DarkRock 5
4080 Super
64 DDR5 6000 mHz
PSU Be Quiet 850W
NVME

I tested my setup with OCCD, Prime95, Aida64, Cinebench. Everything is good and stable. I play demanding adventure games and CPU temp is mostly below 70. Before I played MSFS2020 with no problems. In benchmarks the temperature is not going higher than 85-87C during heavy load like 80W with all cores at 115% and 5 GHz. I tested -20 and -10 as well and it’s also good. For now, just profilactically, I set -20 and tjmax 85C.

Everything is good until I start MSFS2024.

I did a stress test in MSFS2024. I have my own method - log in demanding aircraft (Fenix A320) in demanding scenario (Paris) and slew fast over the city. I realized that CPU is overshooting 4C above tjmax. I managed to force CPU to be 89C constantly. But it worked, no PC shut down. Until yesterday when I took off from Warsaw and slowly climbing. Nothing much was happening and suddently PC shut down. I don’t know, it’s a mystery for me now. I know that problem exist only in MSFS2024 for many people but that’s because this game is very demanding on all cores.

I have suffered a similar PC sickness for some time, that eventually led me to send my Omen 40L to HP for maintenance. They said it was overheating and updated the BIOS, but soon after I discovered that some add ons where provoking the shutdowns. To be precise, Active Sky and GSX, that I used a lot in MSFS 2020. Now I’ve uninstalled them and things work better. As a rule of thumb, I think MSFS 2024 is not prepared yet to intrusive addons.

See also this thread regarding a similar issue.

Suspect #1. Try no undervolt at all.

Suspect #2. 850W should be sufficient (I’ve used one for 2 years with a 4090 and 5800X3D/9800X3D with no issue) but being that close to your PSU’s capacity and experiencing random shutdowns, your PSU may not be quite up to the task..

I tried also with no undervolt and the result is the same. Nevertheless everything is connected with one thing - CPU temperature with high power demand in a short time. Today I set precisely all the cores, most of them are -30 and three of them are -20. Everything is working properly. I also changed TLOD from 150 to 100. That made a big difference. It;s much better. I did few tests in MSFS2024 and it shut down only once or two times, but I really forced the CPU. MSFS2024 heavily loads the CPU when loading TLOD and OLOD.

If you have 4 sticks of memory you could try taking out 2 sticks and see if it still shuts down under stress. Otherwise I agree with @ResetXPDR in that your power supply may not be up to the task.

Uncheck “Automatically restart”" in advanced system settings.

To do this, type “View advanced system settings” in the search bar and press Enter.

Once you’re in the Advanced tab, click on the “Settings” button under the Startup and Recovery section.

Then, uncheck the option “Automatically restart” and confirm by clicking OK in all the windows.

Restart PC.

If a BSOD appears while you’re playing, please write down the error code and post it in the thread.
Also, if there’s a file name mentioned , include that as well.

I did, but I didn’t have a blue screen. Today I was flying to Paris Charles de Gaulle and PC shut down on final approach. The CPU temps were good all flight, between 65-75. And suddenly, when I switched camera to MCDU, I just heard audio stuttering (which I know from my experience that CPU is going too hot, also I saw temp 87 on MSI afterburner which I use) and PC shut down. I assume CPU went above 90 and that’s why it crashed. In my opinion something in the software is wronly written. It’s so demanding, that even CPU throttling is too slow for this game.

I would think that air cooler would be more than enough (I’m running 5800x3d with a Dark Rock Pro 4). Since this seems temp related, I think it’s time to start looking at your cooling. Clean it if it’s dusty, especially the tower fins and fan blades. Clean any filters. Pull panels off the front or side of the case to see if the case is simply choked off. Check your fan curves to make sure they are hitting full speed when temps rise. Pull the CPU cooler and verify the protective plastic cover was removed from the cold plate (many people have forgot that step), which also lets you repaste in case that was bad.

I absolutely love MSI motherboards for their build quality and excellent support - the moderators on their official forum are incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Full professionalism all around.

But that’s not the point.

Please take screenshots of all BIOS screens and include them in your reply.

I to have suffered recent pc crashes but i have put it down to the recent heatwave here in the UK, i have took my side panel of my pc case and havent had one since.

I had a similar issues, but mine shut down as I clicked on a mission on the career mode map. Its only happened once though. Strange.

Didn’t actually shut down but I got a repeated warning about insufficient GPU resources and to lower my graphics settings.
Which is particularly disappointing as it was literally the first flight on my new upgraded machine, having moved from a RTX3060 GPU (where I got a similar warning which was what pushed me into spending a lot of cash) to a RTX 5070 GPU. Task Manager showed the CPU was okay at 65%, but the GPU was at 100%, temperatures within normal limits.
I’d add that I couldn’t get MSFS2020 to run at all, making me wonder if there is something on the servers causing these stupidly high numbers. Will be testing again over the next few days before going back to the PC guy for his thoughts.
