First, sorry for the length but this is gonna have to be wordy.
I have a development on my end. Out of sheer desperation and given Valve/Steam’s liberal 14 day/2 hour return policy; I wanted to see if this was isolated to my copy through the Microsoft store (more on that in a sec).
I bought it from Steam tonight, and held my breath as I installed it. It screamed past 58%-63% and finally started. After countless failed clean reinstalls on my MS Store/Game pass copy, it worked! I was both elated and mad that this third party was able to provide what MS couldn’t. I then remembered that planes don’t get downloaded/authorized till the second go. I setup a few binds, then tried again. Sigh. It stopped dead at 58%. Subsequent attempts were all the same.
I can pretty much deduce the following. There is either A.) a problem plane that is from my large library of marketplace purchases from 2020 that is causing the issue or B.) there is a conflict between what is recognized as “owned” by the sim and what is validated by the CDM server when I load.
More on B.) I preordered/bought the Aviator Edition from the MS Store before launch. It wasn’t the best deal for me given the number of planes I already owned, but I figured I poured enough hours into 2020, that it would be a bargain and a small way to do my part to support Asobo, MS and all the people that keep MSFS, a hobby I love, going. However, I was so disgusted by the launch, and the idea of a long road of waiting for it to be serviceable, that I asked for a refund. After being notified of my refund, I planned to install the standard edition from Xbox Ultimate Game Pass that my son and I share on the same PC and one Xbox. When it was patched to the point of being acceptable, I would buy at least the Premium DLX. Imagine my surprise when I installed it the day after my refund confirmed and noticed I still had ALL THE PLANES included with the Aviator edition. I explained what happened to my fellow flight leader in our Bush Flying group and while he thought I hit the jackpot, I wasn’t so sure. I am pretty flawed, but I am honest. I decided to buy the Aviator Ed once the dust settled for the reasons I described above. I didn’t know who to contact to try to right it, so I just figured it was an extended preview that would be paid for as soon as I could use the sim as designed and advertised. I wouldn’t talk about it here if I didn’t plan to.
SO, now, I am not sure how to handle it. Keep the steam version and let it sort itself out hopefully with a patch OR just buy it straight from MS Store again when they finally right the DRM discrepancy on my account.
The important thing you can take from this is it is most certainly a plane, or similar marketplace asset issue. I don’t think any of the uninstalling, DNS flushing, time sync stuff amount to more than snake oil cures if my theory is correct. Hopefully, by giving us the ability to remove planes/assets in the next patch, we can at least get it running and narrow down the culprit, IF, and it is a big IF, we can actually get in the sim to make those changes.
Best of luck to all of you. Hope this is clear enough.
