MSFS2024 SU3 Slow boot time compared to SU2

I have noticed much slower boot time on application start for SU3 compared to SU2. I have talked to a few users and they are experiencing the same thing. I wanted to log this as an issue but I do not have specific measured time events only that it seems to be a much slower experience withSU3 getting into the sim compared to SU2.

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:
See above

Did you experience this issue before you joined the Beta?
I was on Beta SU2 and boot times were relatively quick, but SU3 is much slower

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?
My Community folder is in a different location, however it is in the same location as it was when running Stock installation, SU2 and now SU3 so this isn’t relevant

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?
Every boot/application start since moving to SU3

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Start application and watch slow boot

YOUR SETTINGS

If the issue still occurs with no mods and add-ons, please continue to report your issue. If not, please move this post to the User Support Hub.

What peripherals are you using, if relevant:
Peripherals are identical to what was plugged in and configured when running SU2 and SU3 so this is not relevant

[PC Only] Are you using Developer Mode or have you made any changes to it?
Yes I have developer mode enabled, but only to find LVARS in the Behaviors tool

[PC Only] Many issues may be due to an outdated graphics card. Please state your Graphics Card Driver Manufacturer (NVIDIA, Intel, AMD) and Version:

[PC Only] What other relevant PC specs can you share?

Device name DK-GAMING-PC
Processor Intel(R) Core™ i9-14900K 3.20 GHz
Installed RAM 64.0 GB (63.8 GB usable)
Device ID 8BE91644-8481-4D3C-B6CB-E656EFBFDDD8
Product ID 00331-20300-00000-AA982
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch Touch support with 2 touch points

MEDIA

Please add a screenshot or video of the issue occurring.
This is not as relevant since it is just booting up versus getting an error.

Do you have the same issue if you follow the OP’s steps to reproduce it?
• I am merely starting the MSFS2024 application and experiencing a slow start up/boot experience in SU3

Hi there @dkgolfnut,

Do you mind me asking if you’ve attempted to download and install any of the default packages within the FS Library whilst testing SU3 Beta? If so, this could potentially be the reason for your slow boot times to the main menu.

Thanks
The MSFS Team

Yes I have downloaded Airplanes and base scenery. Seems like it should be faster as that is all locally installed.

Thanks for getting back to me. I believe the extended loading times may be due to the “Activating Packages” phase. It should be noted that the feature allowing the capability to locally download and install base packages is still not yet fully functioning within the SU3 Beta.

Thanks
The MSFS Team

Absolutely. that is why we are in a beta. This is all about user feedback and improvements to get to a very solid platform

While that is true it’s ever worth pointing out that this part is not even part of the release notes because it’s not even in Beta and more like in some alpha state for the current build.

Just something to keep in mind and I’m not trying to say that your discovery should not be reported

No, loading is faster with SU3 beta than SU2. But I didn’t download any content.
I see the OP downloaded content so the longer loading time is expected.

I nuked all of the downloaded content and the boot time is good now. I will wait until progress is made on on the download/content and management of it prior to going down that path again.

SU3 fail to load after many attempts. Infinite loading time encountered + low bandwidth message. Unplayable despite uninstalling and re-installing SU3Beta. Left the beta and reverted to SU2. Still unable to play FS24 in SU2 due to infinite loading time after clicking “Start”. FS2020 loads and plays as per normal, no problems. Located in Australia and suspect Microsoft Azure problems as other Azure users (Office365) also reported problems accessing server.

Boy that doesn’t sound fun at all

It takes me 35 seconds. This is with all US releated content installed locally and a ton of third-party content.

When I initially downloaded many of the aircraft and most used scenery to local drive I did notice an improved startup time and better performance at complex airports. SU3 was working very well both 2D and 3D. Next day SU3 took a long time to load and would not start after clicking the start button. Like you I nuked the downloaded files but problems continued, both with re-install of SU3 and revert to SU2. Given that no-one else here in Australia seems to be reporting similar problems I’m beginning to think it must be a setting in my PC. Might require a re-install of Windows?

ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:
tried to make things better using the new content download vs. stream. Now during package activation I get to see the intro video a bit more than twice vs. less than once.

Did you experience this issue before you joined the Beta?
N/A - new feature in beta

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?
None present

always now.

I’m seeing longer boot times, as well, and I do not have anything downloaded.

I want to even say the issue seems to have come up with .4 of the Beta, and wasn’t present in earlier builds.

For quite a number of builds, both in SU2 Beta and, now, SU3 Beta, my load would be complete around when the Airbus is taking off or just into the medical mission of the startup video.

Now, I am waiting on world data loading and seeing it getting to the A400M taking off from the dirt strip before Start appears.

Again, where the slowdown is clearly occurring is during that world data load period. This is a change from my recent experience.

Same with me. Started with last build and I have nothing downloaded. Easily twice as long as it was with earlier SU3/SU2 builds.

Always good to receive affirmation.

Thanks for reporting that you’re seeing it this way, too.

I have been in the SU3 Beta since the first iteration and didn’t realise how much faster it was at loading than SU2 until I suddenly got dumped out of Beta after a store update.

Took me a few days to get back into beta but now I’m back I’d say SU3 beta is at least twice as quick as SU2 for me. So the opposite of what some of you are seeing.

Note that I deleted the downloaded content and boot times are back to normal.

Get CTD trying to select a mission - but at least I don’t have to suffer through the opening video two times.

Same here, SU3 loads faster than SU2. Not twice as fast but 10 or 20 seconds faster. Loads in 1 minute and 10 seconds for me. SU2 was 1:20 to 1:30.

.8 has further worsened the load time for me. I’m now having to wait until the hot air balloon scene before Start appears.

Over the last three beta versions, I’ve seen load times get progressively worse.

I use to get Start really quickly at about when the Airbus was taking off or just into the medical rescue scene. With .4 that moved into the A400M scene, and now .8 is into the hot air balloon scene.

EDIT: Well, a subsequent relaunch of .8 is showing the Start in the water rescue or A400M scene, so it must have just been extra slow on first launch after the upgrade to .8. I’m back to the .4 level of load time, but that is better than what I initially experienced.
