Multiplayer Nameplates Showing My Username not GamerTag

For some reason my multiplayer nameplate does not show my gamertag. Instead my nameplate shows my Xbox username which is different than my gamertag. When in multiplayer mode it is confusing to other players since the Discord chat channels use my gamertag.

I am on PC and I have the Xbox app installed. The problem applies to both FS2024 and 2020.

I changed my gamertag a few weeks ago thinking that FS nameplates should eventually show my new gamertag but my Xbox username persists on the nameplate.

Re-install FS 2020 and 2024 (I use both)?

You forgot to attach a screenshot from the Xbox app showing your gamertag.
For example

You also forgot to attach a screenshot showing how your gamertag appears to others in MSFS 2020 multiplayer - either at an airport or during a flight.

If you’d like, I can help you check by logging into an airport

Maybe it would help if I understood a few things!
Questions:

  1. Xbox username and gamertag are/can be different from each other?
  2. It they can be different, then
    A. the name that appears in the upper right of the main page of the sim, is that the Xbox username or is it the gamertag?
    B. The name that shows on the Xbox app page you sent, Ten Patrol, is that your Xbox username and/or gamertag?
    C. Where in the Xbox app can I find my current gamertag? I can only change it to something new but can’t find anywhere to see what it currently is. If I click on Change Gamertag it shows only an empty entry box.
    D. Is the gamertag the name that should appear on multiplayer namplates?

I have attached what I think is the requested page of Xbox app. It shows the same name - Ourwaterman46 - that appears in the upper right of my FS2024 main screen and what I thought to be my Xbox username.

A few weeks ago I used Xbox app to change my gamertag to Cali Flier using the CHANGE GAMERTAG box on that page - that did not change my username in Xbox/Microsoft or in the sim but it seems Discord picked up the new gamertag as my ID. This is the name I would prefer to have on my nameplate. But Xbox username Ourwaterman46 is still on my nameplate visible to other users in my recent group flights - I just found this out by listening/talking on the Discord voice comms.

Bottom line, I’m not sure what the gamertag is really used for if that’s not what appears to other users in multiplayer.

Thanks so much for the help!

Your gamertag is Ourwaterman46 and it should appear exactly as such in multiplayer mode.

Your current gamertag Ourwaterman46 is displayed in the Xbox app.

In the Xbox app, after clicking “Change Gamertag”, a browser should automatically open, taking you to the page

https://social.xbox.com/changegamertag

If, for some reason, the browser doesn’t open or if it’s already open but doesn’t open a new tab, click the link above and enter your new gamertag.
For example, you can type CaliFlier.

Thanks for your prompt help. I did as you instructed, and got the social.xbox web page, and without making any changes I now see that my Current Gamertag is/was Cali Flier (image attached). While my Xbox username as shown in my previous post is Ourwaterman46. I entered Cali Flier as new gamertag at least two weeks ago but as late as two days ago other players reported my nametag was Ourwaterman46.

I was thinking it would be great if one could see one’s own nameplate using Drone mode. But that doesn’t work, apparently.

Will change gamertag again and we’ll see what happens. This time I have to pay $10 for it so it should work. The picture below is what it was for the last two weeks before I make today’s change.

I’m wondering why your amertag has a space in it.
It might be worth reaching out to Microsoft support - specifically Xbox support - since the issue seems to be related to how gamertags are displayed.

The first time I changed my gamertag I did enter it with a space. I see nameplates with spaces in the names - I think it is OK.

Thankls for info. As I mentioned earlier, it would be a good idea to contact Microsoft/Xbox support.

edit
I forgot to ask - do you have an Xbox console, laptop, PC and are you logged into your Microsoft account on those devices, the same account that’s linked to MSFS?

I’m on PC, logged into MS for the sim from Store. And now see that I can change my Discord name to whatever I want, independent of anything else, so whatever turns up on the nameplate that’s what I will be in Discord from now on.

I’m not sure why you mentioned Discord as it doesn’t have any effect on how our gamertag is displayed in multiplayer.

Yes, but in group flights we all talk on Discord voice and our Discord names show up there, so I’d want my nameplate to have the same name as my Discord name so when others see me they would know my name on the voice channel corresponds to my plane.

So when I crash they know who to laugh at!

Before making any changes, you need to decide what your final Gamertag will be. I noticed your Discord username is “waterman46” and now I’m wondering why you changed your Gamertag to “Cali Flier”?

Seems to me that FS 2020/2024 is using each player’s username in the sim to display in the nameplates, and not the Xbox gamertag. Meanwhile Discord seems to use the Xbox gamertag when I connect to voice server in group flights. So if I make my Xbox gamertag same as FS username the the identity difference should be solved.
Not exactly what I wanted but it should be OK.

You only have one Gamertag.
Your Gamertag is displayed in the Xbox app, and if a different Gamertag shows up during the change, it means something is wrong, and you should contact Microsoft/Xbox support to have it fixed.

In both Xbox app and MSFS, your Gamertag should be the same. If you changed your Gamertag to “Cali Flier” it should show up as “Cali Flier” in Xbox app and also in MSFS.
