Multiplayer STILL not fixed?

If there’s one thing that breaks immersion, it’s seeing A320s in place of F/A-18’s.

I don’t like to complain, as there are many things that make this Platform one of the best things to grace my TV screen (more on that later), but this is the biggest issue for me personally and it drives me up the wall.

I’m not sure if it’s the Sim itself, an Xbox issue, internet connection or something else, but it used to not be a problem.

When the Pelican was added, everything was fine and dandy, yet somewhere along the line, something broke and it’s been an issue ever since. And this was before some players’ aircraft won’t even show up at all. Just nametags whizzing around.

If i recall correctly, I believe it was some of the earlier Forza Motorsport games, where you could download “Preview Packs”…if you didn’t have any of the DLC Car Packs, you would download the Preview Packs and your fellow players would show up in your sessions as those cars, but they would not be added to your Garage.

I’ve seen that apparently if another player has the exact same plane & livery as you when in your server, there’s no issue. But, again, things used to not be this way.

I specifically recall during “The Pelicaning”, taxiing out of KDEN with the Darkstar, and everyone, their grandmother and 2nd cousin in the Pelicans around me with all the different liveries.

If Asobo could figure out a way to fix it. Perhaps something like when aircraft are added to the Marketplace, there could be a backend code that injects low fidelity 3rd person models on our end so at the very least, we get some sort of model matching.

With SU10 out of the way and more complex things coming, I’m hopeful we can find a fix. It would absolutely be disheartening to see a nametag with “Bell 407” and find a hovering Bonanza.

Maybe that’s not a problem with MP, it’s more likely you see PC players with the F/A-18E Super Warrior mod. The mod uses a different ICAO identifier than the vanilla F/A-18E (F18S instead of F18E) which causes the mod not to match if one does not has the mod installed

That’s nothing Asobo has to fix in first place - in some other point of view it would be good they change the ICAO code to F18S anyway as that’s the real ICAO code of the F/A-18E and F/A-18F.

On other “mods” the same issue will occur - everything which is not provided through the marketplace won’t work this way. On MP aircraft in general a low quality version (LODs only) could be streamed but that’s something for the future.

that won’t happen as long as you install the packages needed ans as long it’s not a modded version with some different ICAO information  on liveries it’s the same story: if you got a similar livery with the same ICAO airline code everything is fine, if there is a mismatch the sim will pick a random livery on the correct aircraft.

while it doesn’t bother me that much, it is a little ridiculous to see default a330 ai model represent a player F15 doing an airshow over Los Angeles. Don’t get me wrong it’s kinda funny but at the same time, its definitely a “must have” For basic model matching. We can have AIG for vatsim but if you can buy it on the marketplace, non-owners should see the model anyway despite not owning it

Unfortunately, all the ways I can think of right off the top of my head to improve this seem kind of clunky. Some implementations could the previously-mentioned downloading of a model, and some others could use generic models of aircraft grouped by some sort of “aircraft class” data structure; it could potentially be a good idea to have an implementation of each kind with a user selectable option to use either or both, as people with limitations on storage space and/or internet bandwidth/data caps would more likely find downloading models less desirable.

As far as generic models, you could theoretically add a data field to the file defining the aircraft that has some sort of “aircraft class,” but some thought would have to go into how you would do this, and it might require that developers update their already released aircraft to incorporate that data field. For example, you could have a flat one-level list of types like “jet fighter” versus “airliner” or “helicopter” that the sim would then represent with a generic model, or one of the base game aircraft, or one picked from what the user has installed. This of course begs the question of how detailed the descriptions could be, as you could then have “jet fighter small/medium/large” or “airliner wide-body” vs. “airliner narrow-body” vs. “airliner regional jet” vs. “airliner regional prop” and so forth, with the associated challenges of finding the best fit description. You could also have this as some sort of hierarchical tree-like structure with, say, the first split being fixed-wing vs. rotary-wing, and then, say, military vs. civilian, and then, say, on the military branch tactical vs. cargo vs. support, etc., and then the tactical branch having fighter vs. attack vs. bomber, etc., again with challenges of how detailed you wanted to go with this. If they use ICAO aircraft codes in game already, you could have a file defining this for all known aircraft types, but you’d also need to leave room for developers making various kinds of fictional aircraft, experimental/developmental aircraft that have not yet been assigned a code, and so forth.

Was hoping turning on multiplayer would help the world feel more alive while flying.
Turned it right back off after realizing how much it will totally break your immersion.:joy::rofl:

I agree, wish they could do something about that. I do not have anything in my community folder and always fly multiplayer because the sky’s do need an occasional aircraft flying about but I always see FA18’s represented as a commercial airliner and hardly ever see one of the generic FA18’s that are included in the MSFS package. … I realize the kids flying FA18’s around a busy airport are very likely to be BUZZING the field constantly but when I only see commercial airliners represented as a fighter jet screaming by at 400 ktas… There goes the simulation…Kaput !

That, my friend, was an excellent idea ! Similar to a “Ban” list but maintained at the PC level.
Maybe they could add to that a “Distance Slider” that only shows aircraft a selected distance away.
Seems a bit frivolous to show players 100 miles away.

Seems to me they could figure out a way to do shape matching between models, and make it even easier to sort through by looking at the [airplane geometry] section of the flight_model.cfg
