My settings are gone!

MSFS 2020 has killed all my settings without any reason, there was no update or any other problem when I was doing a normal start of the game. Is this something happening to a lot of users?? It is a great waste of time and I guess something that should quite easy to keep in order for MSFS. Is there any way to protect against this problem?

Hello,

I recommend maybe close sim and wait about 1hr, I expect maybe some net issue. I had 2 times very similar problem and all was solved after some time without any action. You can also logout from account for sure (XBOX app).

Your settings are stored in the MS Cloud, to which you need access on every startup so if the sim can’t connect to the servers you’re stuck. I’d suspect you might need to log out and back in via the Xbox app - I’ve had that problem a couple of times. Meanwhile check for updates in the MS Store, they don’t always get installed automatically as well as the Windows OS.
Out of interest how far through the startup do you get before encountering this problem? Can you actually get to the settings pages and change anything?
Of course Murphy’s Law says that by the time you read this all will be okay!

Hi, thanks a lot for your advice, I will try again this afternoon with my fingers crossed!!

Hi, I tried 24 hours after the death of all my MSFS settings yesterday. I followed your advice with the apps updates and log outs but I never got my settings back so I had to invest 2 hours to rebuild all my settings. Answering to your question above, during startup I was presented with some of the settings page including default settings but I didn’t understand what the hell was going on so I ignored them, very strange and obviously the first time I have such as startup. I hope this problem is fed to Microsoft and they fix such basic and serious problem.

When this has happened to me, I have found that a log out of Xbox app and gaming services, then a restart of the pc and logging back into both has brought my saved settings back.

Hmm, very strange. I’ve not heard of being offered new settings at startup, in fact all I’ve ever seen in that situation is an update, sometimes because I’ve managed to delete an essential file which MS thinks I need. Could it have been something like that? Trouble is, the sim is still not fully stable, witness the many and varying problems that get featured on the forums.

At least you didn’t have to do a full re-install and I presume you’re now up and running.

There appear to be a couple of levels of settings. All your settings accessed by Options and all your setting accessed via Assistance. MSFS repeatedly reset all my Assistance options to easy. I have found no consistent reason why it does this.

I have also found that MSFS occassionly trashes all my Options settings like graphics preferences. This has only occurred when I terminated MSFS before it finished loading. I now keep a copy of my Usercfg.opt file so I can restore it if this happens.

Hi, thanks for advices. For info, it didn’t trash my control settings.

“when I terminated MSFS before it finished loading.”

I wonder if that could be a clue as to why so many people are having problems, especially with settings, “killing” the sim without going through the full shutdown? Just a thought.

You will need to save more than your Usercfg.opt file, if you want to restore your settings getting “lost”, including your Logbook, and all your control settings etc

There should really be a user controlled “backup-restore” system, for these unfortunately regular events, where the data gets lost/overwritten on the cloud, resulting in loss of user settings.

The “OH, sorry, but we cannot get your data back” response from Asobo, is really quite unacceptable – Give users a way to locally backup and get their own data back.
