Need advice on monitor

Hi Guys, sorry to bother again with this thread about monitors. I explored some posts here but couldnt find an answer, thats why i m here again to get advice of experts here…

so, i m having a acer monitor 27" 1920*1080, full HD. and i m planning to buy a greater monitor like 32".

so many questions :

brand : samsung, msi, aoc , … ?
curved or not ?
i read that 21:9 ratio is great, but i saw ultrawide screens with 16:9, is it still good ?
4K or not ?
2560*1440 ok ?

my budget is about between 300 and 500 euros,

so now actually my point is my comp… i just have a humble acer i5, 32 gb ram, and a GTX 1050 ti…which is running not too bad for the extreme hunger of the flight sim..
this low hardware will be able to support that bigger and more powerful monitor ? or i wont see any “big” difference ? is the investment worth it ?

thansks in advance, guys, for helping…

No expert, but from your pc specs, I don’t think you should be looking at 4K or ultrawide - just don’t think your GPU will be able to drive that - I might be wrong about the 1050ti though. You also don’t say which i5 you have - if an older model/relatively slow clock speed, that will be a limiting factor too.

Your issue here is screen resolution btw, not physical screen size - that will make no difference to performance. For a 32" monitor though, depending on how close you sit to it, 1920x1080 isn’t going to look great. 2K (2560x1440) is probably your best option.

You can test (to some extent) how this will run by increasing the render scaling to 130 or 140 (133 to be accurate) in the sim by the way - that will effectively render your output at 2K resolution even though it will only display as full HD. You can set it to 200 to see if you can render at 4K.

2K will be materially better than full HD.

In terms of brand, I think ACER, Samsung etc all seem to be quite similar in terms of quality. You always have the risk of getting a panel with dead pxiels or with bleed etc. I’m not sure there is much between them. I would definitely read a lot of reviews though!

Hope that’s of some help

hey…thanks for the quick answer…and the advice
i ve this on here

sorry its in french..
this one looks good, only one thing bothers me, it’s a FHD ..is it gonna be good, or do i need a 2k as you advise..thanks again

better get a proven brand, lotsa reviews on the net, with that hardware full hd is still best.
i run a 32 inch tele form lg, with a 1050 ti., only full hd ,works great.
best stick to 16: 9 , some games dont support ultrawide.
but , thats just my view, as ever , there will be different views.
good brands, samsung, sony, lg, illyama, benq, asus.
do lookup reviews. the answers you get here can be form very good to very bad.

thanks for the answer..
a friend who is gamer freak told me that AOC is not that bad..he is having one
i m not that tech savvy, but i think that aoc monitor is a good compromise price/performance especially for my low specs…but i read more reviews and wiould need more advice..and i would take a “hard” decision then…personally i would also prefer a “better known” brand, but it will be a bit more expensive..of course…i would by this monitor only for playing sim…no other games…

I moved this into #self-service:pc-hardware where it’s better suited

OK, so this ultrawide is effectively the same number of pixels as 2K. Best to test your FPS on this by upping the render scaling to 130 or 140.

As @wcoesel says, there are downsides to an ultrawide - so think carefully before committing.

AOC is OK - I have an ACER, AOVC and ASUS. All different price points, and that’s what makes it so hard to compare.

There is also refresh rate to think about - if MSFS only, then 60 or 75Hz is going to be OK. You might want more for other games.

This is before we get to more technical things like G-Sync or Freesync, or IPS v TN panels etc.

As mentioned, read lots of reviews and articles like this:

I have the Asus 4k 60hz PB287Q in monitor, and it is wonderful. It has very high color saturation, and this makes a difference in color banding in low light conditions. I used to fly 4k in all my sims, and for the most part could get them running very nicely at around 30-40 fps. Now I run everything at 1080P native with frames in the 60ish zone. The only drawback is I miss those lovely 4k screenshots, but 1080p is still very nice. I had a curved gysnc monitor for 1 day before I gave it to my son. Your mileage may very, but in game vsync is preferred over Nvidia vsync, so there’s no real benefit to gsync in MSFS2020.

thanka a lot for the advices guys..helps a lot…but still thinking
one last question..or two…

many monitors have the freesync…is it compatible with my nvidia gtx 1050 …as i read the reviews and saw that it might have some compatibility issues…

and what would be best between ?

aoc 34 flat 25601080 75 hz ultra wide (i like ultra wide for better angles)
and
aoc 32 curved 2560
1440 144 hz no ultra wide..more square.. ???

so larger viewing with less pixels and HZ or more square view and more pixels and a wondderful rate of 144 hz…

again this monitor only for msfs 2020..

thanks again..

so between the

Have you tried upping the render scaling to see how you get on driving 2K of pixels? If that works OK, I’d go for the curved avery time - I think the 2K resolution at 32" screen size is needed. I’d worry about resolution on the HD ultrawide at 34".

Freesync is compatible with AMD GPUs only, not nVidia. nVidia uses G-sync, but it is expensive. Some montiors are called g-sync compatible - that is they have freesync and nVidia have checked and it works as if they had g-sync - a much cheaper option. Relatively few monitors have this though, although nVidia confirms more every month.

There are different views on how to configure v-sync with g-sync monitor. I personally have had good results with v-sync OFF in the sim, but set to “Fast” in the nVidia control panel. I also limit FPS to 40 FPS to improve smoothness.

Full G-sync is expensive and I’m not sure you’ll get something in your budget that you are looking for with this.

If your monitor is only for MSFS, then high refresh rate isn’t an issue - but will potentially be more limiting in the future if you wanted to use the monitor for other games.

If it was me, I;d take the extra pixels every time - provided you can run the sim decently at render scaling 140. If not, then I’d go the widescreen.

But this is personal choice - if you like the widescreen, then look for those or even consider a full 2K ultrawide like this (3440x1440 which is half way betwen 2K and 4K):

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-LS34J550WQRXXU-Ultra-1440p-Monitor/dp/B08WWWZTF4/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=32"+ultrawide+monitor+1440&qid=1624555935&sr=8-4

But you need to test increased render scaling before committing.

thanks again gordongreig for taking the time…so i saw your samsung then…which looks great and strill in my budget frame..so i m a bit scared about the freesync not being compatible with my nvidia as you said..or as i understood (wrong maybe)… i dont use v or G) sync on my flight sim…not that savvy (again said)..
so the monitor samsung you advise woudl be ok then…fresh rate 75 hz ok…
sorry to bother…i owe you a six pack of a nice drink..lol..

its good what you do, no need to hurry hurry and be sorry laters.
if possible try and see those monitors in a shop.
or even with some suppliers you can change them in a certain period

by the way, i think my acer 27 (older one) is a freesync…and works with the gtx1050..
i read also that i need the driver 471.11 from nvidia to make it compatible…

Yes agree take your time. The samsung was just the first one I found in amazon. As I said you need to check your system can run 2k before doing anything

Freesync monitors will work with nvidia cards but unless certified by nvidia as g-sync compatible they will not use the Freesync feature

and how can i do that ?

Increase the render scaling in the sim. See my earlier posts .

2k is approx 1.33 times as many pixels as full HD, so set render scaling to 140 (percent) to see how that works.

4k is 2 x Full HD so set render scaling to 200 to see how that works

EDIT its not perfect but will give you an idea of how well it might work

so means only these monitors will work ?

i m running the sim and put the render at 130.. downloading also the new 471.11 driver and see how it works in abit…

new nvidia driver 471.11..installed and ok.. i notice a slight difference…better of course
renderscale at 140…ok still a bit of slutters but ok..almost same as before;…

and now ? i really woulod follow your advice and buying the samsung 34 ..
