I had this issue in FS X but I am assuming the procedure is the same as in FS 2020. I am flying to a VOR with autopilot with the inward course set. When I cross the VOR, I want to fly on an outward radial of the VOR. But I have AP on and set to VOR/LOC but the plane stops turning when I try to set course to the outward radial. It works for inwards but not outwards. How do I do this? I tried toggling VOR/LOC to no avail.
If there is no way to do this, I also have an ADB to track to but I am again not sure how to set that up in autopilot to fly to the ADB. I’d rather use the VOR.
Thanks!
Okay for the first problem I think I figured it out. I think I needed to be alttle more distant from the VOR and a bit closer to the outbound radial before the AP would kick in.
But how do you (or can you) use AP to go to a ADB(NDB)? I’m not even sure if I know where the switch is to switch from NAV1 to NAV2 on the Boeing 737. Thanks!
Heading mode. Tracking inbound or outbound an ADF/NDB is a pilotage skill. The AP is used simply to hold the heading you want to track. Google - navigating with ADF. It is a difficult subject to learn but very valuable and rewarding.
It’s a 737 MAX… LOL. So yes, glass. Go look at it on SimMarket. I doubt it. I don’t remember. Even transponder doesn’t work on that thing. It’s pretty bad.
Ah sorry I wasn’t clearer. I mentioned it in the first post briefly but not explicitly enough that I was using a Boeing 737-800 in FS X when I was having issues. I forgot there wasn’t a 737 in 2020. My bad. I know this forum is mainly for the newest version. Sorry for the confusion. I’ll look to see if there is a RMI gauge on the 737.
Your ADF/VOR 1 and 2 selectors are just under the minimums ref and baro selector knobs respectively. You fly the track with heading select, the autopilot won’t track an ADF frequency.
You tune the ADF in the ADF pedestal panel, it should look similar to this:
Flying the outbound VOR course you’ll need to track it manually for the first ~10NM as this is tracking the angle rather than distance, trying to track the VOR while overhead won’t work as the needle will be very sensitive, the AP will “chase the needle” around. It’s called the cone of confusion, so manually track your outbound course for a few miles and you should be able to activate your AP and successfully automatically track your course.
Wow thanks for the detailed response! So the VOR1 and ADF1 toggles changes what is shown on the glass display below (looks like it is called EFIS)? I’m new to flight sims in general and very new to the 737. I was just trying the plane out in FS X. I have mostly practiced with GA planes and just started looking at the Garmin g1000 glass panel.
Edit: Looking at ADF navigation, there is no distance indication is there? From reading on the web, you have to see the needle reverse to know you went overhead.
