ISSUE DESCRIPTION

Description of the issue:

Penalties for things such as “landing in undesignated zone” or something along those lines, and “wheel out of runway” are very hard to avoid when its just a giant field and you can’t see where the runway edges are.

[PC Only] Did you remove all your community mods/add-ons? If yes, are you still experiencing the issue?

No addons/mods

FREQUENCY OF ISSUE

How often does this occur for you (Example: Just once, every time on sim load, intermittently)?

Any time landing/departing at a grass strip and you don’t manage to get lucky staying within the “runway”

REPRODUCTION STEPS

Please list clear steps you took in order to help our test team reproduce the same issue:

  1. Accept mission that departs from a grass strip
  2. Take off or land not entirely within the invisible bounds of the runway
  3. Get penalized

1000% yes. If there are going to be penalties for straying outside of the imaginary box, the box needs to be visibly marked.

Are you sure it was actually the “runway”? I’ve had landings where I land on the runway but msfs thinks it’s a taxiway and the actual “runway” is unmarked grass 40ft off to the side half-way off a mountain. There’s some massive inconsistencies with how they’re zoning runways and taxiways across most airports at the moment.

That’s kind of the point, there’s no way to know because it all looks the same. In reality it doesn’t matter if you touch down with a wheel 2 inches off the “runway” when its just a giant field and there’s no markings.

I agree with you, it’s really difficult to tell on many of the smaller grass airports and they should do something to make it clearer. I’ve noticed on some they have small white corner markers to show the corners of the runway, but they’re so difficult to see I’m rarely able to see them even when I’m on the runway itself.

My main point was that whatever algorithm they’ve used to zone runways and taxiways is making some massive gaffs, so it doesn’t even matter in many airports where the runway is still clearly marked and visible, the sim still doesn’t recognise it as a runway because it’s been interpreted it as a taxiway or ‘empty space’…

I’ve made many landings, centre-line of a clearly marked asphalt runway, and the sim thinks I’ve landed on a taxiway for some unknown reason.

Yup, skinny runways too, that you have to turn around on to get to the other end to exit. Same issue.

I’m also experiencing this, taking off or landing on grass airfields which are clearly literally that, a grass field.

Maybe the solution is to not grade grass field operations for on/off runway penalties.

In the past (pre WW2 in the UK for instance) almost all aerodromes were just flat fields with no tarmac, allowing the tailwheel aircraft of the day to operate directly into the wind regardless of its direction. The idea of a numbered runway just didn’t exist for them.

Agreed 100%
