Need some advice on whether to upgrade my CPU (Ryzen 2600X)

So I upgraded from 16 to 32 GB RAM last year which removed some stutters in the game, but I still feel like my CPU is getting really slammed at times.

I have a RTX 2080 GPU paired with my Ryzen 2600X, and I’m playing at 1440p on a mix of high/ultra. Would I see any noticeable improvements by going to say, a 5600X or similar, or am I always going to be GPU limited at 1440? I’ve tried checking utilizations and load in game but they dont seem to be consistent or behave the way I expect so I’m not sure how reliable they are (eg hitting 8 fps sometimes with 25% CPU and 68% GPU)

Id wait for the update on the 27 of july and see if that makes any marked improvements, before I went and spent any more money on the game. Alot of us are having issues where the game sometimes runs at 38 fps and other times it runs at 18 or less.

When it does that I just run Xplane (just bought it because of this issue).

In a word, yes.

I had a 3900x and 2080ti and recently upgraded to a 5900x. I’ve gone from being constantly MainThread limited to the total opposite, almost always GPU limited.

The difference is huge in my experience. I’d agree however, wait until SU5 is out and see where you’re at and go from there.

You can probably find a 5600X for sale now at MSRP. That CPU seems to be the “sweet spot.”

Need to check the specs on your board to make certain it can handle the 5000 series CPU. Some boards merely need a bios flash, but you’ll likely need to flash the bios prior to pulling out the 2600…

I would wait for the update to see how things will improve. But just to see if you can wait for DDR5 and the next generation. Ryzen 2000 series is not really a good gaming CPU, with lots of latency / cache issues if I’m not mistaken. Even Ryzen 3000 loses to Intel 9º generation in MSFS. Just the 5000 series that took the gaming crown from Intel.

So if you feel that the update gave you an extra life, I would wait for DDR5. In case you don’t see much improvement, get the 5800X. The 5900X is too much (12 cores / 24 threads), unless you do heavy rendering or streaming.

If you don’t mind updating again, you can get the 5800X right the way. You should see a considerable improvement.

Absolutely wait. If the improvements shown in yesterday’s Q&A apply across the board your current CPU might be good enough for you to be happy.

Thanks for the tips everyone - yeah I watched the Q/A and that SU5 seems very promising, but I expect as with everything FS2020 related it will be all over the place in terms of improvements for some with almost none for others.

Will wait it out another 4 weeks to see and then make the call. Appreciate the advice - mostly just looking to ensure my CPU and GPU are as balanced as possible without one severely limiting the other. I don’t have the budget for major upgrades for another few years so the longer I can squeeze decent performance out of this 2018 build the better.

Cheers
