Ok, I’ve been watching the developments over the last few days with AMD’s new releases of the 6800 and 6800XT cards and once again all the opportunists swooped down and grabbed them all from the retailers to resell them at inflated prices but I figure at least a few of you flight sim folks snuck in and got one. The reviews are mixed (but positive) so far from the major sites but of course none of them did any benchmarking in FS.
I’ve got an RX580 board that has served me well but FS struggles so I have looked at upgrading with my sights on a 5700 XT thinking when the new ones hit those might start dropping in price. So far nothing’s budging but AMD really hasn’t put enough of the new product on the market yet to get past the scalpers.
The 5700 XT new is currently retailing around $400 and the price on the 6800 isn’t much more - $579. If Flight Sim reviews start coming in with stellar improvements in the 6800 series it might be worth it to take the step. If the improvements are only marginal then I can forgo ray tracing and and DX12 (and AMD’s typical driver screw ups) for a few years and go cheaper.
Anyway, if any of you managed to get them, we’re all eagerly awaiting your reviews.
Hi - I am not one of the lucky ones with a new AMD graphics card but I have been watching the graphics card market very closely for the last few months as both AMD and Nvidia roll out their latest and greatest as I intend to buy one next year once the froth has died down a bit. With regard to your question of which card to buy the biggest variable influencing your decision is actually your monitor. Specifically what resolution does it run at? If it runs at 1080p (1920 x 1080) then a 5700 XT will give you a good experience. If your monitor runs at 1440p (2560 x 1440) you will need a lot more processing power as there are a lot more pixels to push around the screen to make your planes and scenery look good. The third common setting is the so called 4k (3840 x 2160) and if flight sim is running at that resolution then the graphics card to run it consistently at over 60fps in Ultra settings hasn’t been invented. Don’t get me wrong as the top end of the new AMD or Nvidia range (6800XT or RTX 3080) will give a great experience at 4k but you won’t see much over 40fps when flying through dense scenery.
With regard to bechmarking FS2020 some of the websites do use this as a benchmark for graphics cards which will give you a good idea of what you need for your own monitor - subject to your wallet having sufficient resources of course! I would post a link to a site that includes FS2020 benchmarks but as I’m new here I don’t know if the rules allow that and don’t want to get kicked out.

Maybe try going for a 3070? Those have been a little easier to cop.
Make sure to join a discord sever or such in order to track the stock. If you want a specific one that got me my 3080 FE, PM me

Hi, I am trying to pick up a RTX 3070 (upgrading from GTX 1080). Do you know where I can at least get on a list (pre-order) or link to supplies notification. Thanks for any help.

Sure! DM me for the link to a stock tracking discord server.
I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post it here
Microcenter usually receives new shipments on Tuesdays morning. I walked into my nearest Microcenter 9 am and I was able to purchase RTX 3070.
Thanks for info will try next Tuesday.
Well just an update. Not only are the 6800 series cards completely out of stock and only in the realm of scalpers but obviously people had the same thoughts I did and instead flooded the market looking for the 5700 XT cards and now their prices have skyrocketed after shortages. Looks like the 3070’s are doing the same thing. I am really not impressed with those graphic card manufacturers right now and smell a rat. It’s feeling every day as if they knew the popularity that would ensue, kept their manufacturing numbers low to produce artificial shortages so that they could spike prices right before Xmas. My guess is that suddenly we’ll see them return to the market when enough desperate people start indicating they’ll pay those ridiculous prices. My RX 580 works just fine.

I managed to get my hands on the RTX 3060 (Palit), 12gb witha boost clock of 1777ghz. I don’t yet have a 4k monitor, although the card is geared up for 4k so I’m not sure yet how handles MSFS IN 4K, but right now it does a smooth job running MSFS. Perhaps another card to consider in stead of going high end?

Yeah I ended up getting lucky and finding a 3060ti when they were first released and it’s been wonderful.
