New build opinion

I’m in the process of looking for a new computer. I currently play at 1080p at medium settings and get 20-30 FPS, and 30 is pushing it lol. Although if like to eventually upgrade to 1440p when it comes time to upgrade my monitor.
I also typically live stream on Twitch while flying as some light video editing.

A picture will be below but I went with the R7 7800X3D, I heard it was the best for MSFS in a few flight sim groups, and my budget was up to accommodate the 4070 ti super as I heard that was better than the AMD GPUs for live streaming.

Current System:
*Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI.
*Processor: Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0Ghz 4.2Ghz turbo.
*Memory: Vengeance DDR4 16GB (2x8) 3600Mhz.
*Storage: 500GB Samsung 850Evo SSD &
2 Western Digital 1TB 7200RPM HDD Black Edition.
*Graphics: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1080 FTW.
*Cooling: Corsair Hydro H55 liquid cooler &
2 Aero Cool DS 120mm Black Cooling Fan.
*Powerplant: Thermaltake Smart M750W

New build needs a second M2 drive just for MSFS

I would seriously reconsider this PSU for a more-than-2000-bucks build…

there are two, one for the OS and one for MSFS. both 1 TD.

What PSU did you have in mind? 850w? or were you thinking of a Modular as aposed to non Modular?

That PSU comes up as tier E listed (ew) PSU Tier List rev. 17.0g - Cultists Network

I run a 750watt with a 7800X3D and a 4080 super but it’s a Super Flower which is tier A

*Super Flower sounds weird but before EVGA started making their own Super Flower was their supplier

Ryzen 7800X3D and any 40 series card will be a great improvement over your current system. The 7800X3D is definitely one of the forefront CPU’s for MSFS. As another user has pointed out, you should definitely look at upgrading the power supply. I’d always say to go overkill and spend a bit more if funds allow. 1000w and make sure it is Gold rated, not Bronze like the current one in the screenshot.

Back then I built dozens of rigs for family, friends and aquaintences and Super Flower was all I ever used. Not only were they cheaper but they were also better than any western equivalents. Not everything out of China is rubbish (tbf SF are actually based in Taiwan)

My reconsideration idea was not due to the wattage, but because the brand of the PSU, I would rather go for a top tier PSU, then 750W should be fine (EVGA, be quiet!, Seasonic and such).

I agree with all the comments. The system is darn close to what I’d build if I was replacing my current system - except that I’d select a Tier 1 Gold P/S (and probably go with at least 850W. SuperFlower is an excellent choice. My P/S is an eVGA 850 G6. I trust it completely, and I believe it’s at least in part responsible for my system’s excellent stability. I simply don’t have unexplained CTD’s.

Also, depending on how many 3rd party addons you end up with, you might want to add an additional 2TB SATA SSD (or bump up the secondary M.2 drive to a 2TB model.) I personally have 3 SATA SSD’s in addition to 2 M.2 drives. But that’s because I use Macrium Reflect Pro to backup all my data daily on a Full / Incremental / Differential schedule.

Thank you this helped, I changed to a B tier 850 (GT) Watt EVGA SuperNOVA 80 Plus Gold.

right now I’m leaning towards a 2 TB 2TB SAMSUNG 990 PRO 2280 NVME with a second slower one for msfs misc stuff like navigraph and general storage like the 1TB ADATA LEGEND 700 GOLD M.2 NVMe

My current PC has 2.5 TBs of space, one SSD that is my boot drive and misc stuff, and two old mechanical HDDs. One HDD holds MSFS and that’s quite literally it, and the other holds misc flight sim stuff line navigraph, ACARS, and config apps like gsx, orbx, etc. along with steam, and some basic storage.

The Samsung gen 4 990 pro or the WD 850X Black are no apologies ‘solid’ SSD choices. Flip a coin, really. I just run mine on one 2TB all in. Although I have two other computers I use for everything not MSFS.

Thank you for all your help, I ended up buying from Newegg. a little overkill but ultimately cheaper.
I also got a second 2TB MVMe that ill install.

Looks good. Being the 7800 doesn’t really need to be under-volted or overclocked, most of the differences between hours and hours of research and just grabbing components is all really minutiae (and research doesn’t always make for any better a match). It’s pretty happy being a 7800. If it’s got the bits, it’s got the bits. Plus you don’t have to install Windows… :+1:

I got my new computer all set up and man, I didn’t realize how smoothly the Sim could run. lol.

I did have to turn off DLSS because It was doing something funky PMDG’s 737 MCP number, and the speed and altitude tape Numbers, Whenever I change them, especially large value changes
the whole number would just blend into one blur, I found turning off DLSS fixed that. I think DLSS was also Causing some sharing when I panned around.

Thank you guys for all the help I really appreciate it.

Great looking system at a decent price.

Who am I kidding? My 5800X3D / 3090 Ti box cost more than that three years ago. Best thing about modern computers is Moore’s Law.

I’m upgrading to an AM5 system. I got the parts, and will start work on building it soon. All I have to do is install a new motherboard, CPU (7950X3D) and RAM. I’m keeping the GPU for now.

I’m a little worried that my 850W P/S will need to be upgraded, since that CPU can get power-hungry. We’ll see.

An X3D even before they were invented no wonder it was expensive

Looks great!

For the instruments/FG, use TAA and then turn on Frame Generation. It will look beyond 4K sharp and clear and tapes don’t blur.

Why do you recommend enabling FG?

Because it’s awesome. And TAA stays crisp and clear, dlss still isn’t sorted with glass cockpits. The net performance difference from dlss on MSFS is very small. Still the way to go on this ol’ sim. FG on 4k is more of a necessity as at 1440 its easy to bust past 100fps.
