I just built a custom PC built with a 14900K, RTX4090, 96 GB RAM and tons of NVMe space.
With this system I am getting 100+ FPS everything maxed out in ULTRA at 3440x1440.
My question is why I am only getting little over 30 fps on my HP G2 with TTA. If I go DLSS I can get around an extra 8 fps or so, but the clarity of course is not as good. I have tried changing all settings in VR, including tuning down ultra, and that didn’t seem to affect it at all.
Is this a problem with the G2 that is not capable of handling the bandwidth or perhaps WMR is sluggish and is the problem?
I have a second monitor, but I turn it off when playing MSFS.
Please, need some tips of what to try next. Thanks.
Maybe try the settings (adjusted) described here: Quest 3 and MSFS - please make reports here - #289 by RomanDesign
They helper me a lot. 5800X3D, RTX 4090. Especially the “turbo mode” in OXR Toolkit.
And in general…I would say dump the G2 (before MS does in a few months) and get a Quest 3 with the Virtual Desktop app. I sold mine a month ago for ~300$, so didn’t have to add much more to get a brand new Q3 128GB.
Best decision ever. The difference is night and day in my opinion. The ultra small “sweet spot” in the G2 makes it unusable for sims in my opinion. What’s the point of having a super nice image if it’s only dead center and the rest is a blurry mess. I don’t want to move my head around all the time. In the Quest 3 you can basically look wherever, and everything is clear. It’s a game changer. Even if the image quality (compared to the G2 sweet spot) might be a tiny bit worse. Being able to clearly read all the gauges and displays is much more important to me than perfect color reproduction. Plus once you set it up it just works. You just put it on (no wires!), open your desktop, run the sim and press Ctrl-Tab when the plane is loaded and it just works. I had so many issues with the G2 I lost count. None so far with the Q3.
With the linked settings everything is super smooth, even in the Fenix A320 and a heavy payware airport.
Thank you for the quick reply. I am going to try those settings.
My goal eventually is to get the Pimax, but after shelling out so much money in the new system, that will have to wait.
Consider Pimax Crystal has chromatic aberration and that you will be getting lower FPS to run it at the resolutions of the HMD. I’ll be honest I had it and returned it twice. The MQ3 is just better even though all I do is sit and sim. Just trying to prevent you from having regrets. I would suggest buying each and playing them both in a marathon within their return window. Return the loser. If you’ve got the money for 96GB ram and 14900 and 4090, perhaps it’s time to set aside the 1500 bucks to try them both for a week or two. I don’t assume you’ll be unhappy with either, but I came into it thinking I wanted the Crystal and the MQ3 would be a second place finisher. It wasn’t - to my surprise. The reason was the chromatic aberration. The REAL reason was that you can run exactly the same resolution on both (say 3000 x 3000 for example). Although the Pimax has sharper displays, the chromatic aberration ruined it. The supersampled resolution of 3k by 3k per eye looks better in my opinion on the MQ3 because the misalignment of the CA in the Pimax meant that I was only seeing anything better in the middle - and to a very very small degree. Add to it that MQ3 has better support for OpenXR (via VDXR) and I also got better performance. (Pimax still has PimaxXR by the same dev, but it’s functionality is limited with regards to motion smoothing, which is critical in MSFS). Make sure to test each HMD with motion smoothing to prove it to yourself. MQ3’s VirtualDesktop recently improved it’s SSW motion smoothing and it looks incredible now. This also means your system doesn’t have to perform the motion smoothing as SSW is on the HMD. With a 14900 and a 4090 you should have frame rates of 36 FPS locked all day (or 40-50FPS if you don’t lock it down) at resolutions of 3k per eye with TAA and all settings (except TLOD perhaps) maxxed, or as I do with DLSS quality at 4500 x 4500. It’s disgustingly performant and smooth.
Enjoy!
Since I have to wait till later this year to be able to buy a new set, hopefully things will change (like new headsets or versions of current ones.)
I really appreciate your opinion. Sim Hanger (Streamer) said that for the mid-price range, the Q3 is unbeatable, but for the ones that want the most clarity in a set, the Crystal. This is the same guy that a few months ago declared the Pico 4 his personal favorite and now uses a Q3 as his primary. Time will tell.
