New Computer and VR Headset... did I make a mistake?

I’ve ordered a new Alienware desktop machine ( i7-12700KF and RTK 3090 ) and am awaiting delivery… I believe this should be a sufficiently substantial machine to run MSFS in VR.

My question is about my choice of VR systems. Perhaps I got trigger happy and went the wrong route. I selected the Vive Pro 2. I’m a total newb to VR. The more research I’m doing the more I’m concerned I’ve made the wrong decision. Any input would be appreciated!

Your system should be good to go. I am not sure about your headset though, I use the Quest 2, and would prefer to upgrade in the future to the HP G2.

Either-way, welcome to the world of VR, you’ll never look back!!!

See if you can return the headset and do a bit more research first. There’s plenty of info regarding the G2 and Quest2 but I haven’t seen so much about the vive pro 2 but you might find someone you can DM to get an opinion.

I have also got a Quest 2, the pros and cons are well written on the forum regarding one vs the other…it comes down to budget and personal preference.

Even with the ever changing environment of msfs and VR, it”s worth it, I’m still blown away by the VR experience and what it has to offer even if sometimes it can be a little frustrating.

Go with the G2. One of the best HMD for MSFS.
You won’t regret it.

You have some great advise so far, the only difference from my viewpoint is that I upgraded from the HP Reverb to the Pimax 8KX… it is a generational difference in terms of “Field of View” compared to the HP Reverb. The Pimax can be purchased through Amazon and you get a bit of time to return it you you want something else = no risk. The 8kx will be awesome with the 3090 and will be tradeable later for the next generational jump to the 12Kx… check their website. * Also, note that the 8K X has dramatically higher specifications than a VR device like the Quest 2. Again the main factors are significantly higher resolution and field of view. These aspects help bring out the best experience for PCVR games of much higher fidelity than the Quest 2 plays natively. In terms of base stations, like the HP Reverb you don’t require them to play stationary, seated VR experiences such as simulators. The headset can be set into 9-axis tracking mode for non-room scale games that don’t need walking around or VR controllers. The 8KX has 4K*2 Ultra HD resolution, 200° FOV and Native refresh rate 60/75/90Hz & Upscaling 110Hz.

Yep shout out to Pimax, my 8kx is the best VR headset I have tried, and I have gotten most of them. Also, with the next generation of VR headsets on the horizon, Pimax offers a FULL trade in credit for your 8kx off of the 12k’s price. Pretty good deal and might help avoid the buyers remorse from buying a headset right on the cusp of the new gen headsets if you decide to upgrade.

One caveat though is Pimax headsets can be finicky and require some troubleshooting but they have been making great strides in this department too lately.

the pc you’ve selected is good but like others have already expressed i have some reservations about the vive pro 2, i’ve heard very mixed feelings about it.

especially if this is your 1st vr headset, you can’t go wrong with a quest 2 or hp reverb G2. go for the quest if you intend to play all types of games, and the G2 if you’re playing seated sims mainly.

Thanks for the input!

I’ve started the return process for the vive and ordered the HP Reverb G2. The waiting game continues.

I’ve been wondering for a while if I should go that route… I own a 3080 and not sure it could handle it. I like the sharpness of the G2, is the Pimax as sharp ?

i went from a G2 to an 8KX. the G2 is slightly sharper, the G2’s fov is much smaller. i don’t have the 8KX now as it developed a fault for which I was refunded for by Amazon.

The Pimax 8Kx for me was to provide the following

  • No more 7-14 errors that became so frequent that the HP Reverb was almost unusable without spending lots of time to get it running each session

  • Im using the Pimax 8kx at home on an RTX 2080… so yes it will work on your 3080, but to get the full FOV you will need to upgrade to a 3090 as I have tried this on a work computer… freaking awesome as its almost the view you get in real life

  • The 8kx is almost as sharp as the G2, very very little difference between them in real life

  • No Base stations needed for flight or driving sims, but worth it if you want to move your head around inside the cockpit to read small print markings on dials etc.

  • The 8kx is tradeable with Pimax for their next realese 12K out early next year ( see youtube )

  • The sweet spot in the 8kx is MUCH larger than the HP Reverb

Im using a Vive Pro 2 with a RTX3080TI. It works fine. The headset is really good. If you are gonna use it for more than flight sim Id say it is a better package than the G2 (supperior tracking, can be run wireless and it supports the Valve Index knuckles hand controllers). If only for sim the G2 is propably be a better choice, especially due to the price tag.

The Vive Pro 2 get quite hot though. I solved it by mounting a small fan on the air intake. Works like a charm.

I just ordered the reverb g2 and in process of upgrading my GPU to a gigabyte RTX3080.How would I fair with my existing gigabyte motherboard running an i7chip? I have 64gb ram. I don’t have the computer with me atm so cannot remember the exact board and chip, but curious to know how much the CPU will bottleneck the whole system. Any thoughts? I’ve read so much about VR and “accidentally” started upgrading my computer and all of a sudden I find myself purchasing a g2 headset. I’m hoping I’ve made the right decision and my machine can deliver a half-decent VR experience.

It’s all in your settings, sim & graphic card.
Start low as you progress, increments of 10 points at times. You will get to a point were your settings becomes blurry plus stuttering, so back off little by little.
Trial & error. It takes a while eventually you will get there. Use the open xr tool kit. It helps alot, however, stay away from motion reprojection . Good luck…

Alienware is very overpriced.

I bet you can increase performance with 50% for less money if you let the pc be build by a shop and add in a rtx4090 (next gen videocard available just today!). My guess is that you can even for the same amount of money buy the new amd am5 platform which has for years of cpu upgrades coming.

AMD is going to launch its new GPU’s in november and it’s about certain that nvidia has to drop prices for the 4090. So if you can manage to wait a month or two you will even get a much better deal.

Also would recommend the hp reverb g2 headset if you’re just into simming. For roomscale, I find that lighthouse tracking is still the best (index or vive). G2 is cheaper too so you can save a bit for future upgrades.

VR tech is developing fast so 500€ in the future can buy you nice stuff, spend it now (as additional funds) and the upgrade will be small.
