New config: choice of GPU

Hello,
What is the best choice between these two Nvidia products: (RTX 3060 12 GB) and (RTX 3070 8 GB).
Thank you very much for advice.
Best regards

Topic moved into PC & Hardware #self-service:pc-hardware for further advice.

Even though the 3060 has higher memory, it’s memory interface is only 192 bit versus 256 but on the 3070 which translates less data back and forth from the GPU memory creating a bottleneck.

If you’re looking for 4K neither one is ideally equipped.

At the end of the day (at this point in time) it may come down to whatever you can actually find available.

But in the long run for future growth you’d be better off with a 3090 / 3080.

Yeah, to be fair right now and for the foreseeable future there is a shortage of GPU’s on the market. Nvidia’s latest press release on the subject wasn’t very hopeful that the semi conductor shortage would end any time soon.

With regards 3090. For everything else it’s utter overkill. The only reason I picked one up was because nothing else was in stock and the 3080ti was still not officially announced at the time.

It does absolutely slaughter IL-2 in VR though. Even with really busy dogfights.

Hello,
Thank you for answering. At the moment 3080/3090 GPUs are too expansive for my budget. Do you think it might be preferable in the case of MSFS to use a 3060 12 GB rather than a 3070 8 GB as now I don’t think about a 4K equipment.
Best regards

PS 1 I have not well understood which equipment may create a bottleneck (I’m not specialist at all)

PS 2 At the moment I’m seriously thinking to change my PC. I don’t want to do a transfer from the old PC. I guess the right way for doing this is:

  1. Make a complete un-installation of MSFS from the old PC;
  2. Install the boxed premium deluxe version on the new PC under the same microsoft account as previously;
  3. Confirm the initial key or ask for a new one.

In fact I have not found (or was not able to) here or at support a complete description of what to do in such case.

I use te 3070 without VR and that’s quite good. Don’t know how much more performance you need with VR though, and if you plan on using VR

Use the 3070. The 3060 has more RAM, but the RAM is working slower.

3070 - more cuda, faster core faster memory!
The 12Gb 3060 is just an upgraded 2060 with more storage. only the 3060ti has an ampere GPU.

However, I would like to point out that I would still prefer a 2080ti to a 3070.

Even when the 3070 outperforms the 2080Ti by a fairly decent margin?

Cheers to the marketing.
Only in a handful of DLSS optimized titles, and only against stock.

This is what trade magazines promise:

That’s the reality:

2080ti OC (360W) ---------------------------------- Titan RTX Stock ------------------------------Titan RTX OC

Synthetic benchmarks =/= Actual performance in games and only tells you part of the picture.

In most games they are equal, and they trade blows depending on the game. Especially when looking frame rate and frame timing and 0.1% lows, the 3070 eeks it out.

Why would you pay more for an older GPU that is practically no longer available, when you can get the same or better performance for less money?

For most manufacturers and AIB’s you can’t even get a 2080Ti anymore.

That just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

If you were to compare a 2080Ti to any other GPU just solely based on cost (in this case MSRP), you’re looking at a 3080 or 3080Ti which are both well above the 2080Ti in terms of performance.

To use a terrible analogy, its like buying a C6 ZR-1 Corvette for 6 figures, when you can save $20k and get the C7 Z06 which is more capable.

Price to Performance ratio, favors the 3070. Even the 3070Ti is a better price proposition compared to a 2080Ti.

Most AIB’s aren’t even producing the 2080Ti anymore, and whatever they do actually have on the shelf is for RMA/Warranty replacements.

I have both a 3080Ti and a 3070Ti in separate rigs. And I’ll tell you the 3070Ti is 90% of the performance of a 3080Ti in terms of 1080 and 1440p performance. At 4k the 80Ti edges out with its 12GB VRAM.

The value proposition for a 2080Ti is terrible compared to 30 series

Hmm, i would pay 600-700eu for a used ti before 1000 for the other.
