New CTD behaviour since this morning Nov 15th

I never had CTD issues previously, sim has run fine for me since launch. Did a flight yesterday from Gatwick to Greece, landed no issues. Now this morning, no updates or anything on the PC that I am aware of, I get CTD after the initial copyright screen (immediately after the blackshark AI screen).

I’m on Steam. Anybody else getting this? Cannot use the sim at the moment, most frustrating. Tried a restart, no joy, tried another game, which works fine.

Same here but I guess it’s due to Carenado Mooney bug since update.

Should add that I have zero add-ons, community content etc. All vanilla or Asobo DLC. Currently downloading updates to Nvidia drivers, see if that helps. But if not, I’m stuck.

Latest driver version hasn’t fixed it. Perhaps there was a Windows update overnight or something but there’s no notification of that this morning. Most odd. Will have to raise a support ticket I guess.

similar here

no addons in community folder and running sim i get mt fuji screen 2 musical notes that stop then 4 hours later still sitting there in same place.

never loads. have rebooted and no updates as auto updates is turned off

Not done anything was working fine yesterday.

You’re getting further than I do - don’t get to the Japan Update screens at all. CTDs from the copyright screen and returns to the Steam platform.

I’ve raised a ticket with Zendesk and I’ve provided them with the Application-level event viewer logs. Also done a feature update on Windows, no change at all. Never had anything like this before, it’s almost as if something has timed out within the code because on the face of it, there are no updates which could have caused it.

Have you checked Windows Defender? It could be blocking it. Going into the Defender settings and add the MSFS folder as an exception.

I had an issue two weeks ago. MSFS wouldn’t even show the logo. I’d get s black screen for a second and would then a crash. I tried everything, including formatting my pc and reinstalling everything several times! It was a bad week.
Then someone suggested Windows Defender. The problem was solved. I don’t use Steam (so maybe that’s the problem?) but this is certainly worth a try.

Steve

Yeah thanks I read this earlier on Google but I run Norton so Windows Defender Real Time Protection for example isn’t enabled on my machine. Tried temporarily switching off Norton, no change. Also confirmed that MSFS2020.exe is allowed in Norton’s program control, no change. Also then switched off everything in Windows Defender, still no change.

Progress of sorts, although it makes little sense.

Looking at my system, noticed that my free space was 266GB. It was 166GB last night. Very odd. In the last hour of trying to resolve, I’d verified the Steam installation but that was the only task which stands even the most remotest of chances of blowing away the file system. Anyway, I noticed that and started to think that perhaps core install files had, for some completely unknown reason, been removed since last night.

Did a little more searching. Found a post from earlier CTD issues which suggested that deleting the cache file would help. I’d already found a post which suggested clearing out the Steam cache had helped some people, which I tried (after I’d spotted the 266GB issue) but no joy.

Anyway, took a copy of the cache file and restarted the sim. And it cleared the copyright screen and brought up the update screen, and is currently going through the 96.78GB update/install. To all intents and purposes, and thinking back to the 166GB vs 266GB point, the game files have been deleted.

Whether or not it works upon the install completing, and whether or not I have to start over with the training items and a clean log file* I don’t know - will find out and then update the thread as appropriate. Never had this with any other games. I love this sim, and cannot wait for the VR possibilities, but blimey it aint half bugged… Will check the version number before I start doing any flying. I may even just be tempted now to delete it completely and then re-install, will see how we get on.

*I guess this is one way of ‘fixing’ the idiotic ‘vicinity’ pilot’s log issue, which is yet another massive failing in this sim.

Yeah I am pretty annoyed that there isn’t an update yet.

Are you updating via wi-fi ? Wi-fi is known to fail due to a Windows feature (“window auto tune”) that is incompatible with newer modems/routers. You might want to have a look at this page:
and in particular “Fixing slow downloads”.

However you may have a broken install now as the installer is not robust. Meaning you might need to reinstall the entire game, although I cannot say this with certainty.

non related but buggy too is setting up a group , inviting someone , he joins , You have left the group. 5 retry’s and a restart later it suddenly works , we go fly together , You have left the group … FFS.

Nah wired, thanks anyway. Download is painfully slow, perhaps a full reinstall is actually needed. All very weird, as the game was running just fine. Wonder whether perhaps the rollingcache file was indeed something to do with it but we’ll see. Cheers.

For now… which version is active 1.10.7 /. 8 or/.11 ?

Doesn’t verifying the Steam installation delete the game?

Verifying is only for Steam content … and that is the Steam client
afbeelding
It does not check the 100 GB + of MSFS in 3 seconds …

Ah, OK, thought I had read horror stories about having to completely reinstall the game after doing a verify.

Yes, verifying in Steam deletes the game.

You do. I personally had to do it twice: first time when I verified, second when I moved the application using Steam.

Verifying in Steam deletes the game!? Crikey, well that explains it, at least the 266GB vs 166GB issue. As to whether the underlying problem exists after all this, will have to wait and see. Install still running. Tempted now to just stop it, blow the whole lot away and start over.

And the version to answer FSEINDHOVEN is 1.10.11.0

Cheers guys
