New Gaming PC for MSFS2024 - 9800x3d / 5080 combo or 285k / 5090 combo

Just got it and getting it set up. It came as ordered. RTX 4090 with 64 GB RAM running at 6400, Core Ultra 9 285k. Takes a while to update. Wanting to make sure I use the appropriate Nvidia driver, as that can make or break things.

Fantastic - really chuffed for you, and glad that you finally got the system you wanted!

I had a bit of an about-turn myself an ended up ordering an R16 Aurora myself - sounds like exactly the same as yours, but with a 5080 instead of a 4090. I’ve also gone for the uprated 64GB RAM and the 285K CPU.

Quite frankly, regardless of specs, I think we’ve both been through the ringer getting our systems, so it will be nice to get up in the virtual skies and start enjoying ourselves (even if I will be stuttering through VRAM problems, while you glide along effortlessly!).

Take care, and have fun!

That is so true.

My latest experience: I was using 572.70, and things were very smooth, stable and beautiful with my 4K 144Hz monitor using DLSS 4 Quality and a mix of Ultra/High settings. I am loathe to update a driver unless necessary.

Well, it was necessary…

I decided to try FSR3 yesterday (since my 3090 Ti doesn’t support nVidia frame gen) and it was a mess - screen tearing, flickering, and worst of all, colors shifting.

I updated to 572.83 and enabled FSR3 frame gen again, and now most everything looks great. There’s a little shadow shimmering in a few places I need to troubleshoot (or simply live with if it’s unavoidable with FSR3.) But overall I love the result. I’ve been able to set all my graphics settings to their MAX (except that I keep TLOD=140) and the sim is performing really well. I see ā€˜Limited By’ flickering between ā€˜Main Thread’ and ā€˜GPU’ and that’s the goal.

I don’t care all that much about FPS except for 1% and 0.1% Lows, but that low interframe variance makes me very happy. That variance is the best I’ve ever seen.

GlobalFlyer2020, so glad you finally got the new rig.
Keep us posted on your progress with it.

I’m working with a new Honeycomb Alpha yoke and Bravo throttle setup to replace my TurtleBeach Velocityone.

Takes time to get used to it!

Very happy with the Alienware Aurora. It’s a HUGE upgrade over the Lenovo Legion Gaming Laptop. I’m pleased as punch!

I know that Alienware and Core Ultra may not be the most popular, but I’m quite happy with it so far. I’m also glad I purchased when I did, as Alienware looks to no longer be available with the RTX 4090.

I came from a Lenovo Legion 7i Gen 6 gaming laptop that was very highly rated the year I bought it. I got it with 11800h CPU, RTX 3080 mobile GPU with 16 GB VRAM, and 32GB DDR4 RAM. I was able to play MSFS 2020 initially at a choppy 25-30 FPS with Ultra, 100 TLOD, OLOD, with 4K rendering at 1440p. Lots of stutters and pauses with that, and playing for 30-60 min it would become a sub 15fps stuttering mess that I would have to exit the sim and restart to play again. The fans on the Lenovo would be audibly loud whenever gaming. It was working hard.

The Alienware Aurora has Core Ultra 9 285K, RTX 4090 GPU with 24GB VRAM and 64GB DDR5 RAM running at 6400. Wow! In MSFS 2020 I’m able to run native 4K Ultra maxed TLAA (no DLSS or frame gen), cranking up 200 TLOD and OLOD. Locked at 60fps, solid smooth, extremely playable. No fatigue or loss of performance during extended flight sessions. I could probably get higher if I didn’t lock at 60, but it’s more than good enough. What’s more is that the general use / productivity part of this machine is blazing fast. The program starts up and flights load at least 4 times faster on the Alienware than on the Lenovo. I’m impressed how fast everything loads, installs, starts up as well. The machine is super quiet! It plays the game so well and barely appears to be breaking a sweat!

I haven’t yet tried MSFS 2024, as I’ve barely played it on the Lenovo Legion and that MSFS 2024 recently had a major update. I wanted to compare the Alienware with MSFS 2020, as I’m very familiar with how my old machine handled that, and I still consider MSFS 2020 as my ā€œmain simā€ for at least the next few months.

I’m happy with this machine. IF MSFS 2024 were to stutter, it’s likely a MSFS 2024 programming and/or settings issues. MSFS 2020 is silky smooth and it never had been to me before. The Alienware with 285k and 4090 looks to be a keeper.

I’m running RTX 4090 so I’m speaking from personal experience.
This beast is so powerful I don’t even need DLSS, Frame Generation or FSR. Everything runs on ultra settings without a hitch.

In my opinion 566.14 - the last truly stable release without the performance issues seen in newer drivers.
I’m not using DLSS, so I don’t need newer drivers at the moment; as mentioned, they aren’t stable.

I don’t have NVIDIA app installed because it causes more headaches than it’s worth - it’s super buggy. I download and install the drivers manually from NVIDIA download site.
