New GPU Installed, but PC shows old GPU

I updated my GPU for a better MSFS experience, and I know you guys know your stuff when it comes to PCs (and I sure as hell don’t).

So I had an old Nvidia 1650ti. It was sub-par to say the least, so I started doing most of my flying on the XBox after that version came out. Anyway, I got a ASUS DUAL-RTX3070-O8G-V2 Dual RTX 3070 V2 OC Edition today. I installed it in my Razer Core X, and plugged it in. The device manager and the GeForce Experience app both still showed it as the 1650ti. I took a quick flight with it and did notice a improvement of FPS, but then I started tweaking settings and messed it up (dropped back to about 15-20fps)

Anyway, since then I have been trying to do a clean install of the drivers to get my PC to at least recognize the RTX 3070 before I start trying to get the optimal settings. I used the Display Driver Uninstall App numerous times. Each time, it seems to delete the drivers (the GPU is missing from Device Manager) but as soon as I install the driver for the RTX 3070, it reappears as the 1650ti (also still shows 1650ti in the GeForce Experience App). I also uninstalled and deleted the 1650ti via Device Manager. Same result.

Again, sorry for my lack of PC expertise. But hopefully this has happened to someone else and they can give me a solution.

Have you remembered to restart the PC after uninstalling the drivers? Also, it might be worth going into device manager and removing the graphics card from the device tree and restarting again.

Another thing, are you installing the driver using the installer from the Nvidia website? .

@XR219 Thanks for the response! Yes, the Display Driver Uninstall App automatically restarts the PC after it uninstalls the drivers. I also did remove the 1650ti from the device tree and restarted. Nothing works. It seems super weird.

I have tried multiple driver download sites. First was Nvidia, then ASUS, etc. Same result every time. The drivers are gone and the 1650ti is missing from the Device Manager after I run Display Driver Uninstall (as expected). As soon as I install the new driver for the 3070, the 1650ti pops back up into the device manager. I really don’t get it.

What does the Nvidia control panel report the device as?

@XR219 Nvidia control panel reports it as a 1650ti :frowning:

I’m clutching at straws. Can you remove the card physically from the machine and put the old card back in and see what the Nvidia panel reports?

Does the Razer Core X need a driver update?

@NixonRedgrave Funny thing about that…there is literally no Razer Core X PC drivers out there. If you go on their support page, they only have a driver update for Mac. Another dead end.

@lc4c It shows it as the 1650ti. I honestly can’t understand this. I turned automatic driver updates off and uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers again, thinking the PC was just auto populating the 1650 back into device manager…but, same result. It’s still showing as 1650ti

Oh, hang on. This is a laptop (XPS 15) with an eGPU box (the Razer Core X). Are you sure the XPS 15 actually supports this? Yes, it has Thunderbolt 3 ports, so I suppose it should, but this Reddit thread suggests it’s troublesome:

I don’t think that this is a software issue, you need to get the Device manager to recognise the RTX 3070.
Once you have done that, the Nvidia software will do the rest.
It looks like your computer is a laptop and that the 1650ti is the default inbuilt graphics hardware.
Perhaps you need to visit the BIOS and get that to recognise the replacement card.
If you like You Tubes, there is plenty of guidance.

@AncientDisc6642 Thanks! The 1650ti actually wasn’t the default built in graphics processor. It’s the junky Intel UHD card (kinda crazy since the rest of the PC is semi-stacked). The 1650ti was external in the Core X. I simply replaced the 1650ti with the 3070, so you would think it would recognize it.

@FlyerOneZero Thanks for that link! I have done everything they have mentioned in there…EXCEPT installing the Studio driver as opposed to the Game Ready driver. Maybe that will get the PC to recognize it? It’s worth a shot. I have uninstalled and reinstalled 100 times already. May as well do it again!

Is this the first time you’re changing the card in the eGPU enclosure? Obviously the 1650Ti worked, but if Windows insists that it’s still seeing that card, but the display is working with the 3070 installed, that suggests to me that the Core X is somehow lying to Windows about what’s installed.

Sounds odd, I know, but it’s the only thing that makes sense to me. Maybe there’s some way to reset the Core X.

Could it be a fake maybe? Where did you buy it? I don’t want to be alarmist, but I have read about fakes in the past, although GPUZ can flag them up sometimes.

Is it possible to install it in another machine at all, just to see if the problem lies with the card or your PC?

@FlyerOneZero That’s exactly what I am starting to think. It’s mind blowing to me that Razer has no PC drivers for the Core X. From what I know, this was a big selling product for them, but they make it impossible to update.

@EnjonUK I doubt it. I bought it online from Central Computers, a Bay Area computer store with 5 locations. They are pretty reputable. And the packaging was perfect and the card is definitely beautiful and new, so it would be a pretty elaborate fake for just a couple hundred dollars worth of profit. Also, the chances of the fake card being the same 1650ti as my old card seems even slimmer. And based off a couple quick test flights which definitely had better performance, it seems the card is ‘working’, it’s just not being recognized as a 3070 by my PC.

@FlyerOneZero And the studio driver didn’t work. Same problem. So yeah, I am really starting to think it’s just my Core X telling my PC it’s got a 1650 in there.

@FlyerOneZero I did find a way to reset the Razer Core X…wondering if I should try this. Would I do this with the GPU installed or would I take it out?
