I’ve read several entries about monitor suggestions, but I have a little different situation and need some advice. I currently have an older setup (i7-7700k, GTX1070) on which I run three monitors and stretch MSFS over them. That works OK. I’m about to receive a new i9-10850k RTX3070 and my “financial adviser” has given me the green light to purchase a new monitor to go with it. I have strict instructions to keep it under $400 though. I’ve probably seen a hundred monitors, and to be honest, between the response rate, 4K, resolution, curved or not curved, refresh rates, G-String (although I believe that may actually be G-Sync) and what have you, I’m just not sure what to buy.
I’m keeping my old PC and will use that for surfing, spreadsheets, etc. The new one will be dedicated to MSFS, so I’m wide open to what monitor to use. I’m leaning SLIGHTLY towards a curved monitor, but that’s not critical. About the only thing I care about is that it not be too tall. If at all possible, I’d like it to be under 20-21" tall and somewhere in the 28-32" wide range.
Thanks for any advice you can give me, I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.
Odyssey G5 series from Samsung seems to have great reviews for a moderate price point monitor.
SAMSUNG Odyssey G5 C32G57T 32" WQHD 2560 x 1440 (2K) 1 ms (MPRT) 144 Hz HDMI, DisplayPort FreeSync Premium Curved Gaming Monitor @ Newegg for 369.99
I recently updated my computer and wanted to replace my 1080p 32” LG monitor with something better. I went with a Viewsonic 32” 4K for $A390. Very happy with the clarity and resolution. I fly in VR on a G2 but sometimes I just like to take in the scenery on the new monitor.
Note: It’s not curved. I have no need for multi monitors as I used TrackIR when on the Monitor and VR.
Track-Ir is actually pretty awesome with three curved monitors.
I use a 4k Samsung 50 inch and run it in 2k (2560x1440) but… I now use vr so I dont use the monitor anymore. I want to be in the sim. Not looking at it.
Under $400, look at Sceptre 35" 3440 x 1440, 100 Hz. GREAT for the price. I love mine.
Thanks to all of you. I’ll add those to my list.
I looked and looked at monitors last year. Do your research on what the specs mean, and how that relates to how you want to use it. I learned a lot about what those specs mean and how it relates to my use. I decided to wait until the products demonstrated at CPES in Vegas hit the street, but then sim has been so buggy I have let all my desire evaporate. However, if I get one, I need to see if I can also use my old one as well. It’s a 32" Samsung curved monitor, and for 90% of what I do, it’s fine. Having a clearer MSFS experience would be nice, but had to pay huge federal tax bill, so need to save my money and a new monitor is not in the cards now. I would check reviews on YouTube several excellent testers out there who review them. Also see if MSFS reviews cover monitors as well I know Squirrel did one 18 months ago.
You want HDR and at least 1440p. Mine is 32 inch and MSFS looks amazing and at 1440p I don’t get a big FPS hit.
HDR is important if you like nice bright clouds and vibrant scenery. I thought MSFS looked great on a standard monitor but it all looks so dull and lifeless now by comparison.
I would get an ultrawide one. In a week you will not be able to game in a 16:9 monitor anymore. Just like going from HDD to SSD. You simply can’t go back.
Especially for MSFS and flight simulators, the extra FOV is priceless. Now, when I go to my backup rig with a 16:9 monitor, it seems that I’m wearing blinders.
