looks like the issue i was having was not related to the graphics card, since it was mostly always freezing and not CTD, so i searched further, and it seems i was hitting this known bug.
been able to sort it now with fix recommendation there to unbind the NPP view from the saitek x52 hat button. finally… i need to search better.
