Hi, I’m planning a completely new PC primarily for MSFS (will probably do software dev and other gaming on it), don’t currently have the game as I don’t have hardware remotely capable of running it.
Here in the UK it seems you can get the new 12700kf/ddr4/3060TI for broadly the same price as a 5800x with a 3070. Currently I have a 4k 60Hz monitor but the plan is to go 1440p ultrawide. I can’t justify the jump to a 3080 for better 4k so I’m wondering if it’s worth going with the 5800x/3070 for a bit more GPU headroom or the i7 12700k which seems to me to potentially have better performance currently and longer term. I can see myself mainly wanting to fly airliners into big airports which inclines me to lean towards the intel option.
Cheers
wait a while… the price of hardware is outrageous plus the sim is not fully optimized. I run a 3070TI at 1080p and 1440 but dont expect miracles…
if you can save the extra 4 quid I would 100% go 3080. 3070 is a middle of the road GPU to be honest and I didnt notice a massive increase compared to my 1080ti
I just skimmed a few videos really quickly and I feel I can make no educated opinion.
As you said, very slight lean to the Intel as tech that should improve but then the 3070 is clearly dominant, tough choice indeed.
Thanks for the replies. My thinking is that GPU prices are insane but CPU/Ram/Mobo is fairly normal so I’m telling myself it makes sense to push the budget that way right now and wait and see what Intel/RTX40x0 brings. I suppose it comes down to whether a 3060ti can handle 1440p ultrawide satisfactorily (if a 3070 can do 30fps for example does it really matter that a 3060ti is say 26fps?).
Nvidia is expected to launch souped up versions of their 30 series card starting this coming January.
They may or may not sell at MSRP in a store near you.
However, I would say it is worth the wait.
Re CPUs:
Today, Intel vs AMD, the blue team wins hands down. That is especially relevant for those running the sim at 1080p and 1440p, resolutions for which single threaded performance is all the more important.
However in January the red team is also expected to announce new souped up AMD chips, still AM4 socket, with increased cache, IPC and thus performance. It may or may not bring them on par with Intel. Either way it will impact pricing of existing chips.
Another reason to wait until these announcements materialize IMHO.
Most of this is expected to be officially revealed at CES 2022 in three weeks:
Check out the intel site … ark.intel.com for CPU specs. The Alder Lake CPU’s require a beefy power supply. Some versions require 240 Watts of power. Also look at the cooling of these systems. Liquid cooling is preferred. They have 30 MB of level three cache which is good.
The 5800X is a 110 watt CPU and can reach a peak of 4.8 GHZ with 32MB level three cache. Also requires a beefy power supply and liquid cooling.
With Nvidia 3600ti some versions have as little as 4GB of VRAM. I would add 300 Watts for the GPU’s. You Have to investigate these package deals and look for shortcuts such as low output power supplies, GPU’s with low memory, Air cooling as opposed to liquid cooling. Assembly fees, software installation fees, extended warranty.
The following video by a serious youtube reviewer is focused on gaming performance per watt (actually he measures FPS per watt) of Intel 12th gen vs AMD Zen3. Surprisingly, Intel is more efficient:
I am running a 10700k 2060super 1440p ultrawide and barely average around 30-40fps.Performance can be lower with clouds That is on a mix of high and ultra. GA flying will get me possible into the 50s if its rural flying. Still run into mainthread problems when sitting at large airports.
1440p ultrawide is no easy resolution to run. You are better off getting something with 3080ti level performance for better longevity.
There seems to be no end in site for gpu prices. My upgrade goal was a 3080 but those low MSRP prices are long gone.

The RTX 3060Ti runs neck and neck with the RTX 2080 super. Considering that my previous 2080super worked just fine running the sim on my 3440x1440 ultrawide at ultra settings … i dont see why a 3060ti wouldn’t do the same.
I wouldn’t push the card much further than that resolution though and while it may be ok to run now it may not be once the sim gets more graphically complex (large airports with maxed out traffic.)
For the sim a 12700kf really needs a 3080 or 3090 to do it justice or you will just end up mainthread locked with no real performance benefits but just a cooler running cpu.
