Did you ever wish to do crop dusting with the Stearman ?

You can download the mod here :

WARNING:
This mod will replace and add files to the original ā€œdcdesigns-aircraft-stearmanā€ folder.
It is safe to make a backup copy of your aircraft first.
This mod is for both Stearman variants (Standard and Faired) in version 1.0.6.
After download, unzip it in a temporary folder
All needed infos are in the install.pdf

For those who like me prefer to fly the Stearman in its ā€œnakedā€ version, but find it underpowered,
you can replace the engines.cfg file with this one.
The parameters are those of the nine cylinders, 450hp non-turbocharged engine.
Unfortunately, the engine visuals don’t change (I’m a wizard, not God… ).
But in flight it’s really something else, much more pleasant to fly.

Is this still the best (oh boy what did i do) biplane in the sim?

Objective emotionless unattached unbiased responses only please :stuck_out_tongue:

The best biplane in the sim, to me, is indisputably the Tiger Moth by Ants.

In my subjective, emotional, attached and biased opinion; the Tiger Moth by Ant’s Airplanes is the best biplane we have currently.

I was thinking of the other biplanes we have in the sim and there’s quite a few now. I shall go through the ones I own and briefly consider if they’re better than the Stearman.

There’s the An-2 which I consider better. Although it’s a bit of a weird one isn’t it? Kinda in its own category, can’t really compare it to the Stearman but I did anyway so there’s that.

The Beachcraft 17 Staggerwing, I rate it better but once again you kinda can’t compare it because it’s a closed cockpit luxury passenger plane, quite a bit different from the Stearman. The Stearman is more fun to fly but I like the Staggerwing better overall.

The Bücker Jungmann by Lionheart Creations. A plane that I’d consider to be in the same category. I do like it but there was a weird issue where if you had it downloaded and installed every airport in the world would become a Jungmann convention apparently. It was a bit annoying so I’ve had it disabled for a while now although looks like a recent patch might’ve fixed that but I’ve yet to give it a go. I’d rate it around the same as the Stearman really, maybe a little bit below.

The YMF-5 by Carenado. A modernised version of the classic WACO. It looks better but I prefer the Stearman for flying as the YMF-5 cockpit is just too modern and clean for my tastes lol.

Back to de Havilland there’s the Fox Moth by Flight Replicas. Bigger lumbering plane but still open cockpit (but closed cabin). Kinda interesting and fun but I’d rate it below the Stearman.

Yet another one with the de Havilland Dragon Rapide freeware by Dave Garwood. It’s alright. I’d rate the Stearman above it though.

Back to WW1 with a couple of Nieuports. The 17 by Big Radials and the 24 by FlySimWare. I quite enjoy both of them but I guess WW1 birds are not to everyone’s tastes. Not sure how I’d rate them compared to the Stearman to be honest. Maybe a bit higher? Although again can’t really compare… but whatever I just did. There’s also a Fokker Dr.1 freeware by Gotfriends but that has an extra wing so we won’t count it (but it’s good!)

The Curtiss Jenny. I like it and you can’t argue with free. Looks and sounds great as well. Very slow and cumbersome though. I’d rate it a bit below the Stearman.

Dorand AR1 A2. I almost forgot I owned this one. A WW1 bomber. Think the dev just bought a 3D model from one of those online stores and slapped a flight model and some animations on it. I’d rate it a fair bit below the Stearman. Just kinda meh.

The Grumman F3F-2 by Aeroplane Heaven. Kinda fun to fly but sounds really bad and Aeroplane Heaven ain’t gonna bother improving it any further so don’t bother buying it. Worse than the Stearman.

Wright Flyer. Like the Jenny I do love it from a historical perspective and it is really well done, it’s just not really something you’re gonna fly every day  I’d rate it below the Stearman because of that but I still love it.

Dunno about this one but the Flying Flea by Rara-Avis sims, does that count? It’s more of a tandem wing jobby I think. But if it was allowed into the biplane club I’d rate it above the Stearman. I love those weird little things.

And I think that’s it for MSFS biplanes I own. That’s quite a few  I’ve been thinking about buying that Farman Goliath by Redwing for a while but not quire sure. Maybe one day. I think there might be some FSX portovers on flightsim.to I’ve not tried as well.

In terms of within the sim itself, the YMF-5 is my favorite biplane of the ones I own (Stearman, Jenny, the default Pitts aircraft, and the Wright Flyer being the others - in that order).

The Stearman was my favorite aircraft in the sim for a very long time, and is still probably my second favorite. I just wish it could be up to par visually with the YMF-5 and the Jenny. It could really benefit from some better texturing and rounding out some sharp edges. And of course a few more liveries would be great - but I’m just being picky. I’m on xbox so I don’t have the ability to download others. The Stearman is one of my very favorite aircraft in real life and in the sim, so I always want the best for it in the sim.

Think its starting to off the original topic.

Comparison is a good, healthy part of discussion in my opinion. I don’t find it off topic at all. Forum moderators may feel otherwise, I don’t know if there are rules regarding that, but I personally find comparisons helpful, particularly when interested in buying an aircraft.

A very thorough breakdown. Thanks.

I have a really hard time flying it as you can’t get away from looking at the trailing edge of the wings, which is much too thick in this model. Granted, it’s not supposed to be a sharp tip either, but not this thick.

And the cockpit structure isn’t all that accurate either.

It’s nice though if you can ignore that.

The elevators are supposed to be full length, I think they got the propeller turning the right direction now.

@Megadyptes7635 nice list and sum up!

You forgot this one hahah

Praise from the list man himself! I’m honoured.

I did skim through my hangar looking for multiple wings and I did actually notice the forgotten Pitts, but then I got distracted by something else briefly and forgot all about it. :eyes:

I hate to be ā€œthat guyā€ but all these are ā€œbi-planesā€ visually only.
Under the hood they all use a ā€œgame magicā€ single wing for the flight model.

So while you may think you’re ā€œflying a bi-planeā€, you’re still only flying a single wing plane.

ah, the power of ā€œgame magicā€ is truly astounding is it not!

Really we should be rating them on the quality of the open cockpit experience, more so than the flight model. Wind in your virtual hair, throaty sound of a big radial or sewing machine inline engine, creaking wires, that sort of thing.

Enjoy!

ps: You’ll have to wait for MSFS 2024 for a true virtual bi-plane flight model (or any number of wings/surfaces), as explained by the dynamic Masabo duo in their video from FSExpo.

From 8’20" Seb explains the single wing hack and the new method:

Haha. Here he is again with that totally logical, accurate, valid and reasonable argument to spoil the mood!

I’ve known about the single-wing hack since at least FS9 but it doesn’t stop me enjoying them

I never said you can’t enjoy them or have fun. I alluded to that with:

It’s why I use the Stearman or Waco to get my open cockpit experience fix. I have some of the others too.

There’s hacks all over the place to emulate flight behaviors, from the PC21 using a jet FM to invisible spoliers to emulate beta descents. No skin off my nose if a bit of ā€œgame magicā€ is needed to make the UX.

It’s why I laugh every time I see someone go on about plane X being ā€œrealererā€ than plane Y.
Lets not even get into the rivet counters.

What counts is the overall experience, which encompasses not the just flight model (faked or otherwise) but the modelling, texturing, interactions, sound (hugely important!), support material, product support, ete etc. You know it when you see it, and it definitely doesn’t have to cost a ton to pull that off.

It’s more a question of being a ā€œreal enoughā€ experience it can transport you too, given we’re playing a consumer flight sim with a spectrum of control systems in a variety of different environments.

All that said, if you’re in any way interested in playing with the SDK you need to be aware of what’s happening under the hood.

I wonder if there’ll be a limit on the number of wings that can be simulated in MS 2024. Could be fun to have a fully simulated silly plane like this

Over 200 aerofoils on that baby. Apparently it even managed to fly 500 feet one time!

Wiki has a whole list of silly number of wings planes

Except…they didn’t flyšŸ˜‚
But you can try!

Maybe we can do one of those whatcamacallit comps where they run off the pier for distance.
That could be a fun amateur builder comp in MSFS, sounds like tSFS 2024 will enable that to some degree.
