Redwing started the development of Constellation more than 8 months ago, long before PMDG released the DC-6 at 55$ (since raised to 60$). In their business calculation they probably anticipated a Xplane/P3D price structure where airliners are in the 70-80$/£+ range. Also Redwing chose a very ambitious project with several different cockpits, different variations of the airframe including one with weather radar (yet to be realised).
Concerning the price, let’s take a look at the MSFS airplane 3rd party planes. My prices are mainly from Simmarket in euros with European VAT (25 pct), (your tax situation and currency conversion may be different).
Redwing Constellation 52,94€ (early access)
Aerosoft CRJ 550/700 52,51€ (70,58€ for the /900 bundle)
PMDG DC-6B 51,30€ (without tax?)
Just Flight Hawk 40,95€ +25% tax
Just Flight Warrior or Arrow 39,54€
Nextgen Simulations Bandirante 37,18€
Roland Laborie F-8 36,25€
DC Design F-15 35,16€
Aeroplane Heaven Electra 34,40€
Aeroplane Heaven Spitfire 34,88€
Milviz Corsair 33,20€ (without tax?)
Flysimware Widgeon 31,49€
The airplanes on the list above varies greatly in terms of complexity, fidelity and quality. Clearly the Constellation with its complex systems is more work than most of the 30-40€ on the list. Perhaps 52€ is a bit on the high side, but not by much. You can’t expect a complex airliner like a Constellation delivered at a high quality for 35-40€? As someone mentioned above we have yet to see the pricing of the modern airliners coming out within the next months (hopefully). The question is what will the quality of the Constellation be, when finished - and the price?
In the meantime I’m having great fun exploring the 1950s Douglas-Lockheed prop liner rivalry in books, YouTube videos and in the cockpit of MSFS.
PS. If anything, the airports are overpriced. 15-20€ for some 3D models without much coding.
