This kinda came out of nowhere, but in any case, here you go… This is very much in the vein of their other WW II pack, the Japanese Mitsubishi birds.
Disclaimer: I do not own this nor have I tried it. I DO know that the Mitsubishi birds in BeeKay’s other product fly well and are pretty fun. I can assume these ones do too, but they are… assumptions.
Visually, this collection seems even rougher than the Mitsubishi ones, at least going by the video on JF’s site. This is not even FSX territory, this is more… FS 2004, I would imagine. At least internally. Externally, they look passable. BeeKay has a passion for historical aircraft and I appreciate his desire to bring it to flight sim fans, but pricing this at $26.99 is gonna be a no-go for me.
I am also NOT a fan of the way the scenery (time-relevant WW II soldiers, bases, equipment, and ships) is now a part of the package in the same folder as the aircraft. I very much preferred the initial release of the Mitsu pack where scenery is a folder you didn’t have to put into your Community folder. I am not a big fan of having the modern world of MSFS infested by a bunch of lo-res troops from the years gone-by.
BeeKay, if you are reading this… I love ya, love your passion and commitment and the updates and the videos and the community involvement, but this is ROUGH looking. At least internally. I know there are some who can suspend the disbelief just for a nicely flying plane, but… this is MSFS. The price point in no way reflects the visual quality. I am far from a rivet counter but… there are things that are rough around the edges (some REALLY fun birds in the sim are that way) and then there is FUGLY. Sorry, brother! All the best. I hope the planes fly nice, I really do.
BeeKay released a freeware He-162 a few months back Native project Heinkel He-162 Salamander V0.9h » Microsoft Flight Simulator looks like this payware pack has some varients on it but the freeware is there if you wanna give it a try. I flew it around a bit and it was pretty interesting. Not the best looking plane but quite unique!
This actually brings up a point about the cockpits… When the Mitsubishi pack was released, it included the Zero and Rufe… Cool. The cockpits on those were… passable. Not good, but I could fly them and suspend my disbelief enough because the birds flew nicely! Then the updates came and as much as I flew the Zero and Rufe, today I tried the two new variants included - Kate and Val. The cockpit quality in those is absolutely inexcusable. We are talking 100% dive from the quality of textures in the Zero and Rufe. They seem to have very “placeholder” meshes for various buttons/dials… the panels have NO text or labels on them. Everything is either very square or very round. Remember when I came down upon the GoldenAge Kinner B-2? THAT thing is a masterpiece in terms of textures comparing to the two new Mitsu variants as well as the planes included in this Luftwaffe package. This makes me wonder… Technically, it’s a LOT of planes included. I’d say, for $26.99? It’s too good of a deal to have that many planes. IF THEY WERE DECENT LOOKING. But you have a couple that are passable and two that are absolute rubbish. Wouldn’t it be easier/better just to do the two better and not include these additional ones? I am not sure I get Romantic Wings’ development strategy here.
I don’t want to take anything away from the aircraft and the thought put into these packages. They are lovely for the WW II aviation history buffs. And some of the included scenery is a nice touch as well, my only gripe here is the visual quality. And I am far from a “rivet counter”.
Well, the product page of the new Luftwaffe jets on JustFlight has a video where you can see the cockpit. In terms of the Japanese pack and the subpar textures on the new variants? Here you go, straight out of the sim. I don’t want to post pics for the Mitsu birds in a Luftwaffe thread, so I am posting them in an appropriate place. You can see my post at the bottom here: (give me 5 minutes to post, about to fire it up)
