New router/now no MSFS connection

Hello from the UK. I’ve moved my desk setup to a new room and to make sure I can get a strong connection my network provider (BT) sent me a new router and range extender disc. These were all set up fine, my computer is showing full bars of wifi and speedtest.net is saying I have download speeds of 60mbps which is pretty much the max I can get without full fibre here in the UK.

However, MSFS will now not play in online mode. I either get an insufficient bandwith or server error and it switches to offline mode, or if I haven’t started a flight yet it just hangs on the loading screen.

My new router is dual frequency 2 and 5 GHZ and my PC is 5GHZ compatible. On my old router you could choose which GHZ you wanted to use as you connected separately, but that doesn’t appear to be the case on the new one (although you can turn off one or the other completely). I’ve reset the router and moved the disc but to no avail. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Why not use a ethernet powerline adapter Ethernet Powerline Adapter
I have been using mines with BT broadband since fs2020 came out in the UK, and it seems to be working alright. :grinning:

We have very old wiring - I don’t think it’d work.

OK so your internet works. Have you managed to do any flying? have you managed to get the satellite data streaming? If not, then you may have an issue with your router blocking microsoft services… have you tried playing any other games online? What is your upload speed on the speedtest? have you checked to see if there are any weird parental controls on the router?

Thanks @sthackrey

Yes my internet is working, although it seems to be a tad inconsistent, but only on this PC.

I haven’t tried playing any other online games but will give that a go now.

Here’s a snip from my speedtest, upload is 17mbps which is typical and hasn’t caused me any problems previously.

I believe that I once read that MSFS 2020 would only work with 2.4 - not 5. I may be wrong, but somewhere in this old memory, it is saying that it was MSFS that required that.

Ooh, that’s interesting. I can certainly turn off 5GHZ if I need to.

@sthackrey Interesting!

Well, I tried. Go on to the troubleshooting message above. Thinking back, that might have been my weather station connection.

Mmm … I switched broadband provider this year and I was also sent one of those routers which doesn’t allow you to choose between 2.4 or 5 ghz. Frankly, I found it a massive pain and very frustrating since the router made its own decision over which applications received the higher bandwidth. It was definitely a downgrade from my previous (8 year old) router despite the media hype. In the end (after about a week) I threw in the towel and spent a couple of hundred pounds on another router (Asus) which gives me total control and now I just use the freebie router as a modem. MSFS 2020 now gets a priority high bandwidth and I have no further problems.

Suggestions though before you are tempted to go down this route;

  • as an experiment turn off the 2.4 ghz band and see if FS 20 works better

  • try your old router and use the 5 ghz band with FS20

  • use ethernet instead of wifi if this is practicable. This will give the best speed of all with a good ethernet cable

  • when you test your internet speed and get a reading of 60 are you testing from the PC which has FS20 on it or are you testing from another source which is nearer your router? 5 ghz is a short band as you probably know and isn’t great for long distances.

  • perhaps also try moving your router e.g. away from any obstructions which could impede wifi signals

Anyway, best of luck. Hope you get it sorted :slightly_smiling_face:

Mine works great with the 5 band. It is a short band though and won’t work as well as the 2.4 band over longer distances :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks yes the speed test is on my PC with MSFS on. I will try turning off each of the signals in turn to see if that cracks it. I had it plugged in via Ethernet before but when I first moved rooms it worked okay. It’s only since I changed routers I’ve had this issue.

Does your router have an Ethernet port and is it practical to run a LAN cable? That would be the preferable method of connecting.

Just don’t fancy running a long cable all the way through the house, plus I have two young kids who would definitely discover it, pull it up, yank on it etc.

I think you meant this for Barthes787 :+1:

If this is on a PC, download and run a FREE and SAFE program called Speedtest. That would tell you if you are getting a usable WI-FI signal.

For what it is worth I think this problem is solvable :slightly_smiling_face:

I think you just need to narrow it down to where the problem lies e.g. the new router, router location (signal being blocked), PC too far away from the router, or something else I’ve not thought of.

Another thought. When you are siming are any other members of your family using the internet? If so, that could also cause problems.

Yes, totally understand :slightly_smiling_face:

Could be a bit of a hazard too and easy to trip over not too mention looking pretty bad and like spaghetti junction

This could help or could lead you towards a solution. It sounds like you have some ports blocked on the new router that were open on the old one. I don’t know if this applies to MSFS but for Xbox live to work, these ports need to be open on the router.

  • Port 88 (UDP)
  • Port 3074 (UDP and TCP)
  • Port 53 (UDP and TCP)
  • Port 80 (TCP)
  • Port 500 (UDP)
  • Port 3544 (UDP)
  • Port 4500 (UDP)
