New to VR MSFS2020 - Wanting advice to remover blurry scenery

Hi There, I am brand new ( 3 days) to VR Flight Sim, however I have over 600 hours in 2D. I have done a lot of research by reviewing youtube channels (Thanks OverKill, Mark from SimHanger and VR Flight Sim Guy) and have reviewed the Bang for Buck post in this forum but no matter what I do my scenery is all blurry and not clear and some of the finer print in the cockpits are difficult to read. I am able to get smooth flights with little to no stutters which is great but looking out the cockpit doesn’t provide me that wow factor. My interest is mainly flying airlines so a lot of high altitude stuff. In saying that, it would be good to get clear visible scenery when taking off and landing rather than a blur. Even the clouds look blurry.

I have even tried the recent discovery of setting your render scale to 200% in the PC settings (that did not work for me).

I have the HP reverb G2 head set and the following system:

Graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER
Desktop: Dell G5 5000 (i7 - 10700F CPU @2.90 GHz 16Gb RAM.

I connect to MSFS2020 via Xbox Game Bar.

I also use openXR.

I am thinking of upgrading my graphics card to a 3080 and am wondering if this will fix the blurry issues. If there is any other advice you can provide me I would be ever greatful.

I am absolutely loving flying in VR but wanting to make the experience even better and more realistic.

Many thanks.

A 3080 would make a world of a difference, I recently went from a 1070 to a 3080ti and it went from almost unflyable to butter smooth (when it works).

Though there are some things to keep in mind if you are going to consider this upgrade:

  1. How powerful is your power supply? A pre-built coming with a 1650super probably won’t have enough juice to drive a 3080

  2. If you were to upgrade your power supply would the components support it. I know that dell loves to create proprietary ports that only their motherboards support and only supported by their power supplies

  3. And if you were somehow able to get past the previous 2 points, is the case big enough for a 3080 with enough air flow. Dell’s prebuilts are usually pretty tight inside and 3080s can get quite big (both long and thick). And their airflow is usually quite constrained.

So in my eyes I don’t think it would be possible to implement a 3080 in what you’ve got currently.

Increasing the render scale should definitely improve the crispness of the image, especially the legibility of text and instruments within the cockpit.

However, the Reverb G2 is quite a high resolution display and I’m not sure that the GPU you list as active in your PC is the best fit for that headset and pushing render scaling is definitely going to make life harder for it.

I like VR, it’s great in aircraft where you navigate visually and don’t have complex systems and tasks that might actually be better handled on a couple of monitors.

Dogfights in IL-2, DCS or Warthunder all absolutely rock in VR for example, as does flying around in a simple GA aircraft in MSFS2020 (aerobatics in the Pitts or VFR flights in the Savage Cub for example can be breathtaking.)

There are performance improvements on the horizon. (Coming early July followed by a DX-12 update coming later) and then VR optimizations are also in dev the roadmap going forward after the Xbox launch) but until then I’ve actually stopped using VR in MSFS2020 altogether as even with an rtx3090 the performance with a Valve index is still sub-optimal especially in photogrammetry regions.

Before you update your GPU verify that the Power supply in that Dell is actually a standard ATX form factor rather than some proprietary type that Dell have thrown in there.
You will definitely need more power to run a 3xxx series GPU but as these are still really hard to get at reasonable prices you have time to slowly upgrade the components you need to make that work.

I noticed the VR just seems to be getting more blurry with last few patches. I flew it and it just seemed super bad, then flew Aerofly 2, and it was like I got new eyeballs…

Running 2080Ti, valve index…. used to ok, but I don’t even want to fly it anymore, not surewhat changed, all my settings look the same….

I would keep tweaking until the 27th July, when sim update 5 arrives your hardware “might be OK ish”
Keep your hand in your pocket for now.
