Are you getting “no HDR” or are you getting “HDR10 tone-mapped to 400 nits so it fits in your monitor’s contrast range”?

I really don’t know, I just glossed through. I don’t even have HDR but I just noticed them in there.

I am getting HDR but way to bright paper white.

I found a couple of interesting items in the Release Notes and the Knowledge Base article.

#1 — The Knowledge Base article Considerations for Playing Games with HDR Enabled states:

“To take advantage of high dynamic range (HDR) in HDR games and videos, Microsoft recommends enabling Windows HDR (Settings > System > Display) prior to playing HDR content. For some HDR TVs and computer displays, however, HDR colors and luminance are not accurate. For these displays, standard dynamic range (SDR) works best. To relieve customers from needing to constantly enable and disable HDR from the Windows settings, the NVIDIA driver dynamically switches HDR on and off based on the content.”

I never knew that NVIDIA uses dynamic HDR switching. The article says there are problems with HDR settings in games and Windows. It recommends “setting the Windows HDR and the in-game HDR to the same setting.”

I think that if Windows HDR is OFF, then the MSFS setting is disabled. The problem I’m having with the washed-out HDR colors is when Windows HDR is ON and MSFS HDR is enabled. Apparently the NVIDIA automatic switching isn’t working correctly.

#2 — The Release Notes state:
“TDR/corruption occurs in the game with Windows HDR enabled. If this issue occurs, toggle the Windows HDR setting.”

All of my recent CTDs have been due to the NVIDIA driver crashing due to TDR timeouts. Maybe these CTDs are HDR related.

Clearly there are still issues with the Windows and HDR implementation. Until these issues are resolved, I’m keeping Windows HDR off.

Not sure what happened, maybe after a reboot, but contrast is almost the same now in windowed and full screen mode. :+1:t4:

I also changed resolution to 4k and I set the resolution to 4k, which gave me more options for refresh rate, though maximum is 59Hz now. I can’t set it to 30Hz as suggested because in MSFS the FPS halves to 15FPS (no idea why). I use vsynch at 30FPS to smooth out my frame rate.

Setting the colour depth to 8bpc makes the MSFS window way to dark, so I’ll leave it at 10.

The problem I get with screenshots being overblown is still present though:

Replace your hdmi cable, I had the same issue when I went thru this ordeal, except in my case I could only get it to run at 30. I went out and bought an expensive 4k hdmi cable *(and set the ports to extended) and that finished the fix for that problem… ;p

If you’re taking screenshots with the NVIDIA overlay tool (which can save HDR images as .jxr but they will appear overexposed when loaded with most non-HDR-aware tools), I’ve made a utility that can convert the HDR .jxr files into regular SDR .jpegs with some tone mapping applied. The sample settings I recommend provide an ok conversion comparable to what I see on-screen on my DisplayHDR 400 monitor, but I hope to improve it in future.

Yes, Windows + PrtScr is always washed out on HDR because it’s not an HDR-capable screenshotting method.

I use HDR with a great Asus HDR 10 monitor in 4k and HDR is still not great in the sim. I don’t understand why they can’t provide end user ability to calibrate in game, like every other game in 2018+ has.

Since NVIDIA is saying there is an issue with NVIDIA and Windows, I doubt in-game calibration would fix anything.

But then all HDR games I play would be bad, and that’s not the case?

The utility watches for `*.jxr files but my screenshots are saved as *.png files.

Can it be tweaked to look for png files instead?

Sounds like HDR is disabled on your system. Check the Windows display settings and the HDR10 setting in MSFS.

(Assuming that you are taking those screenshots with the Nvidia overlay tool.)

If you have multiple monitors, check that the monitor with HDR for gaming is set up as the primary monitor. In the past (much older nvidia driver version) I had some trouble where it didn’t recognize it should take screenshots in HDR because the primary monitor was a non-gaming monitor with no HDR.

I’ve decided to turn off HDR. I’ve been reading about HDR10 and it’s not true HDR, which explains the lack of contrast. Monitors that support HDR400 are much more expensive and for good reason.

And this ties in with what I’m seeing - with HDR off I get better contrast (in particular better blacks), plus I can take screenshots with native Windows functionality, so it’s a no brainer.
