No Nelson's Column or Buckingham Palace in London

I’m enjoying myself flying over the Thames in central London this afternoon and head towards Big Ben, then north to Trafalgar Square. This is my first time here in my new MSFS on PC. There’s Traf Sq all right but the buildings are all wrong and there’s no sign of Nelson’s Column. So, up The Mall towards Buckingham Palace - It’s not there, just a 2-D footprint. I’ve got Data turned on in General Options Data and Photogrammetry and Bing are turned on in General Options Graphics. What am I doing wrong please?

I’m fairly sure Nelson’s Column isn’t included in the default PG London, you’ll need the Orbx city pack payware to add it. Same might be true of the palace, although I was sure the UK World Update modelled it. You have downloaded and installed the various World Updates?

You definitely need the UK update which you can download for free from the flightstore. From memory it is world update 3.

Thanks folks. No I haven’t downloaded either. I’m still a novice at what I do and MSFS does on its own. I’ll have a look in the flightstore.

Hello @LankyCape030052,

Welcome to Microsoft Flight Simulator! As the other posters have mentioned above, you’ll need to download World Update III: UK & Ireland from the in-sim Marketplace to add the enhanced scenery for London. This is a free download available to all players at no cost. There are also 13 other free World Updates for various other regions to download too! Feel free to get them all or just the ones that interest you.

Thanks,
MSFS Team

Go to the in-sim Marketplace and look under the ‘Free’ or ‘World’ tab to find it. Or you can manually type it into the search box. There are 14 World Updates in total, plus 4 City Updates. As far as I can recall, Sim and Avionics updates are downloaded automatically by the sim as and when available.

Thanks to yourself and JakTrax78 for this extra info. I’ve just been back to central London to check for some of the features mentioned on your link re World Update 111, just in case these came in on their own with my recently purchased MSFS; they didn’t, the London Eye and Buck Palace definitely aren’t there. So I’m about to download and install World Update 111. Before I do, can I mention that I’ve read through the 3 steps mentioned in “How to prepare for this update:” in your link and I’m wondering do I still need to follow these steps with my new MSFS without the risk of spoiling something?

I’m actually on Xbox but the Marketplace download/install process should be the same. I’d always follow any official guidance when installing but I think those instructions basically mean you need to have the latest version of MSFS installed. As long as you have it, the process should be a doddle. Just make sure you delete the contents of any current cache.

If you really want to make London pop, you’ll need the Orbx Landmarks pack, which frequently goes on sale at various online stores (including the in-sim Marketplace, often referred to as simply the MP). It tidies up the major buildings (default photogrammetry isn’t the best when viewed close-up) and adds a good number of extras, such as Nelson’s Column and Piccadilly. Very worthwhile add-on if you frequently fly around/over London.

Thankfully, World updates are an OPTIONAL part of MSFS.

While they add a lot to the Scenery Detail on the sim, they are BIG downloads, and not everyone wants or needs enhanced scenery for area they do not fly in.

Also, those with slower speed Internet, are thankful that they are not forced to download ALL these World Update, that potentially amount to over 100 GB of both download & storage.

I personally (at the moment) only choose to install the USA, Canada & UK World Updates, as that is where I primary fly – MY CHOICE.

My Personal Observation – Nothing OFFICIAL below:

Note: It has been reported by Navigraph, that to use USER WAYPOINT in a Fight Pllan, you MUST install ALL World updates, or you “may” get those waypoints displaying to be at the “North Pole”.

This has NOT been my Personal Finding, but rather to avoid the North Pole issue, the Flight Plan must be correctly formatted to have “fake” ICAO codes for User waypoints.

Flight Plans generated, saved & then reloaded from the Wold Map does not have these Fale ICAO codes for ser waypoints – but processing you FP through Little Navmap, does add in those needed fake ICAO codes for User Waypoints.

As far as I am concerned, this is still an ongoing issue, with Navigraph, and the MSFS World map

If you do NOT install Navigarph, the the above is NOT an issue – ie No North Pole issues when Navigraph Nav Database is NOT installed,.

Just to let you all know that your solution worked a treat. World Update 111 downloaded, installed and running nicely. I brought the Cabri down nicely in Trafalgar Square just east of Nelson’s Column with the realistic National Gallery just up the hill to my right. Illegal as far as VFR are concerned and completely dead-man’s-zone on the speed/height chart, but lovely in the sim! Thanks for your help folks.

And, btw, you can’t use MSFS and not have the latest version installed. It will automatically update you when you start the sim as the system updates are released. All System updates are mandatory. The “World Updates” that you find in the Marketplace are optional, but recommended.
