No Snow in Canada

I just took off from Calgary YYC in real life an the entire world is blanketed in thick snow as far as the eye can see.

I went to re-create my flight in MSFS2020, however there isn’t a drop of snow in the sim. I was surprised by this because Calgary and YYC are big hubs with lots of weather data available.

Anyone know why MSFS isn’t picking up on very-obvious snow cover in January?

Same reason(s) it’s been hit and miss since day 1 of release.

If you want reliable snow coverage you need to use a third party weather engine.

Which ones are good?

I used REX WeatherForce in the early days of 2020 and it was quite good, however it slowly, then quickly became too far gone (for my liking) with each sim update caused more and more issues that the REX team don’t seem to be able to get a handle on and resolve.

Performance issues primarily, then OAT, Transitions, etc…

So I went back to live weather for the longest time and just dealt with it.

Then along came ActiveSky FS and that has been rock solid!

I use it on every flight.

The other nice thing about ASFS is they give you control over virtually every aspect of the program.

Example (and relevant to this thread);

  • Added new option: Snow ground cover threshold temperature, sets the temp at which ground snow is canceled (when at or above this temp), when ground snow is enabled (using NOAA downloads)

I agree with WeatherForce. They just can’t get their heads wrapped around the difference between station pressure and sealevel pressure and it keeps mucking up their altitude calculations, throwing everything off. I too settled on ActiveSky. As you said, rock solid. :slight_smile:
