Non G950 Pilatus PC-6/B2-H4 versions are missing an ADF display

Looks like all variants are missing the ADF display, not only the skids one. Or maybe it is the opposite, they should not have an ADF radio and that is why there is no ADF display ?. If someone that knows the IRL PC-6 could confirm what should be the correct instrumentation setup ?

It is hardly possible to specify a “correct instrumentation”. The same type can be equipped differently. It’s like a car. If this type has an ADF radio, it should also have a display. Other types are equipped with a glass cockpit and AP. ADF should be standard equipment on older types.

Funny, I never noticed because I use the Blackbird PC-6, but if you look really closely on this one, there is a covered instrument on the panel. It seems this should have been a dual-needle RMI as if you look above it, there are two small placards, indicating which needle is ADF and which is VOR.

Either this was a purposely inop’ed instrument (which should have inop’ed the radio as well), or it was perhaps supposed to a placeholder and never quite got added/updated, or there’s another way to activate/uncover it that we haven’t figured out.

The label says “ADS” not “ADF”, is that something different ? or a typo ?

Found something else: if using the variant with G950, you can display the ADF and this time, tuning a frequency on the ADF radio make it works on the display. So it looks like the issue is only with the 2 non G950 variants that have the ADF radio but not the ADF display that should go with it.
Below at KABQ that as an NDB station nearby.

Work Around/Alternate Method.
But hopefully we’ll get an ADF. I like flying the needle too.

For the versions missing the ADF, you can get to an NDB without needing/knowing the ADF freq using the GPS method.
You’ll need to know the Garmin or learn it, but pretty easy and mostly intuitive.

Go to the WPT section in the Garmin, then NDB section.
-Find the NDB name you want.
default vfr map, charts, maps or if it is given to you in the bush trip instructions or try the garmin "nearest section, if you’re close enough for it to populate there.

-Enter the NDB name.

It will show you the course to that NDB.

You now have a choice to make.

-Just fly that heading using your compass. There’s challenges to this method.
OR
-Select Direct To. You’ll now have a magenta line to follow on map screen or go to the deviation screen for a more accurate view.

You’ll still have to hand fly(no autopilot) but the pc6 does trim out nicely.

I’m not sure if it’s a typo or if there’s something else blocking it, but I guarantee that’s what those placards were intended to be. You can see the solid/single and hollow/double arrows represented as they are on so many dual RMI setups.

I don’t know exactly but that seems to be a typo. ADS = Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast is normally a ground station. I am not aware that airplanes have such a thing.

Yes, I am aware of that. However, this is not possible for aircraft with the GNS 530. Nothing can be done without an ADF display.

Why can’t you use the AP and fly in HDG mode?

No AP in this version.

For the ADF I can’t do anything, but for the autopilot I can suggest this:

To access the autopilot on the Microsoft PC6 classic panel (not G950), place this mod in your Community Folder after unzipping.
Valid for both wheels and skis versions.

As there’s no A/P interface on the panel, to control it you can use the keyboard, or a dedicated interface like the Saitek/Logitech Multi Panel or the VKB FSM-GA, or a button box. The possibilities are near endless.
A slightly expensive but effective solution is a Stream Deck which like the Saitek/Logitech Multi Panel allows you not only to control the A/P but also to view its status.
A free solution also exists:

This app lets you control your A/P (and other things) and displaying its status on a second screen or another PC, but especially on an Android device. (Seems it works with iOS too).
Here’s a great use for that old smartphone or tablet sitting in your drawer.
