Why do I need to manually edit the usercfg.opt? Can’t I just select DX12 in the MSFS 2020 graphics settings?
If it’s crashing you won’t be able to actually load the sim to change the settings…
Never such a thing as a silly question!

New driver appears to work fine for me, in 2020 and 2024. No glitches or stutters, very smooth.
13900 KSS & 4090. Using DX12 in 2020 for 4 years, and would never allow the Nvidia app to “optimise” my sims for me. I’ve actually tried it a few times - but it’s rubbish, and I always revert to manual settings.
Ah! Excellent point! For me, it was crashing with that error only when I started a flight from the map screen… was able to get in to the graphics settings and make the change to DX12 there. So far, it looks great (honestly can’t tell the difference between DX11 and DX12) and the occasional flashing I used to get in VR with DX12 seems to be gone…
If you’re running MSFS 2020 in DX11 mode and install the Nvidia App - then disable Game Optimization and the in-game overlay - you’ll experience a CTD during MSFS 2020 loading, so you won’t be able to change the game settings.
That’s why the only reliable way to keep using all of the Nvidia App features without CTD is to switch from DX11 to DX12 in your usercfg.opt or alternatively select DX12 in MSFS 2020 graphics settings before installing the Nvidia App.
There are some workarounds for 24H2 after latest windows updates for all gpus for chromium based apps and (web browsers?). (nvidia amd intel etc)

I changed to DX12 after updating to this driver because CTDs showed up. But now I am having lagging problems. So I will go back to the earlier driver and back to Dx11 I think..
Well guys I bit the bullet and bought a ASUS 5080 to go with my ASUS MB and I am in love
576.28 works just fine and I have everything turned up and I have GPS cycles and VRAM to spare in a 787 at SFO with custom airport.
I am getting some stutter on landing at SFO but it may be the AIG Tech plane injector I am running at SFO… 100+ planes. Will turn it off and see what happens.
Anyway, I fly my test flights from Reno to SFO over an area that I flew for real for decades and it looks great.
If there are any technical questions about my set up please ask… except for what I paid for the board…
Did you manage to get all the filters to show up with the latest driver?
I had CTDs halfway loading 2020. Turn off overlay and it loads fine. I’ve given up on the Nvidia app. I get better performance without it installed. I’m able to change the DLSS to latest and then uninstall the app and it still holds these settings. I can tell this works because using the old DLSS gives me flickering over water using FG. With setting it in the Nvidia app and then uninstalling the app, it runs fine and no flickering. I no CTDs.
I should be getting my 4090 back from JoshiRepairs this week (it recently melted itself to death, go nvidia).
I’m still tempted to just sell it and stick with my new 9070xt… everything is working fine at the moment.
But if i do decide to give the 4090 another go (mainly thinking of the extra vram i guess), is this latest driver actually stable and ready to be used yet? Or are people mostly sticking to 566.xx versions and either forgetting about dlss4 or using dlss swapper?
Having an RTX 4090, You don’t need DLSS - I have 4090 and don’t even think about DLSS and FG. I play with TAA and everything runs perfectly.
As for nvidia drivers, there’s an issue with the latest NVIDIA drivers if you’re running MSFS 2020 with DX11 and have the NVIDIA app installed - this combination can lead to CTDs. You can avoid the problem by switching to DX12 in MSFS 2020 before installing the NVIDIA app, if you really need it.
Regarding the latest driver itself - I have it installed without the NVIDIA app, and I haven’t had any problems in MSFS 2020. As for the 2024_SU_beta, it is what it is and the driver won’t change that.
cheers. I’m still on 2020, and run dx12 already…I’ll stick to TAA then. That’s what I’ve been doing with the 9070xt too, except I’ve been using their fluid frames technology…works really very well for flight sim…but with the 4090 i’ll jsut switch all that off Can probably go back to full res (7680x2160) again too.
Thanks for confirming, new driver, no app is totally fine
Trying to optimize my new5080 and I think you are saying it is OK to install the NVIDIA app… I swore it off a while ago. This will allow me to use the 3X FG?
I never said it was universally “OK” to install the NVIDIA app - I said you can install it if you need it. Personally, I don’t need the NVIDIA app, so I didn’t install it.
I agree. I am trying to keep a minimalist approach. Even with the 5080 you can drop performance very easily.
Same here. I don’t use the NVIDIA app and keep a pretty bare bones OS.
