OBS Freezing When Streaming MSFS 2024

Does your OBS freeze while doing MSFS2024?

I’ve been struggling with an issue where OBS freezes when streaming MSFS 2024 , and I’m running out of ideas on what’s causing it. I’ve done a lot of testing and tweaking but haven’t found a solution yet. I’m hoping someone here might have insights or suggestions. Below is a detailed breakdown of my PC specs , what I’ve tried so far, and the results I’m getting.

I haven’t played MSFS 2024 in three weeks. Since then, both OBS and MSFS have received updates. Today, I loaded the ATR in MSFS 2024 and started streaming. Everything ran fine for over 30 minutes, CPU usage was around 40%, and GPU usage was at 50%. Then, out of nowhere, OBS lost all bitrate and completely froze.

Summary of the Problem:

  • OBS freezes randomly while streaming MSFS 2024 (usually within 20-50 minutes).
  • No crash logs from OBS, but Event Viewer shows an AppHangTransient error.
  • Bitrate drops to 0 right before the freeze, and OBS becomes unresponsive (white screen, not clickable).
  • MSFS 2024 runs fine before OBS starts freezing.
  • MSFS 2020 does NOT cause OBS to freeze, but FPS is lower, and CPU bottlenecks are more noticeable.
  • GPU usage spikes in MSFS 2024 compared to MSFS 2020, even when settings are lowered.

Error Message:

The program obs64.exe version 31.0.3.0 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Security and Maintenance control panel.

The strange thing is, this doesn’t happen with MSFS 2020 or any other games, only MSFS 2024.

Why is it only affecting me? It works fine for others!

None of that does not resolves it. It’s if OBS dislikes MSFS24 - Anything else works fine, it’s just when doing msfs24

Just posting an update on an issue I’ve been having with OBS while streaming Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

The problem is that OBS will drop from 6000 kbps to 0, then freeze, even though the timer and CPU info keep running. Strangely, this doesn’t happen at all in MSFS 2020 with the same settings.

My system specs:

  • Intel i7-10700K
  • RTX 3090
  • 64GB RAM
  • Upload speed is 111 Mbps, and download is over 900 Mbps, ping of around 9ms

So far I’ve tried the following:

  • Switched from NVENC to x264 (same results, bitrate still drops to 0)
  • OBS shows no rendering or encoding lag
  • Running OBS as administrator
  • Set OBS process priority to Above Normal
  • Tried multiple streaming servers
  • Disabled all overlays (NVIDIA, Steam, Xbox Game Bar)
  • Limited MSFS bandwidth and lowered LOD settings
  • OBS logs confirm that all dropped frames are due to network issues, not CPU or GPU performance

At this point I’m thinking MSFS 2024 might be hogging some kind of system-level thread scheduling or interfering with the network stack, causing OBS to lose upload priority. It doesn’t seem to be a bandwidth issue, encoding is smooth, CPU/GPU aren’t maxed, and the logs support that.

If anyone else has seen something like this specifically in MSFS 2024 or has tips on managing OBS and network traffic when system load is high, let me know. Appreciate any input.
