Oceans

I enjoy flying quite often (Xbox) on the coasts of various countries, continents. I have purchased some great DLC that adds various boats and creates a wonderful experience when flying up and down the coastline. But that all is quickly made bland with the ocean just looking like a great big pool/bathtub. There is little movement and just does not feel like I am flying over our wonderful oceans/seas.

With some experimenting with the wind a ground level, you can create some great looking ocean effects that really add to the game. Unfortunately it becomes really hard or impossible to fly in the winds that are needed to generate some movement in the water.

This game needs to do one of two things:

  1. Add a new layer that only affects the ocean, so we can add a wind layer to generate larger waves

  2. Edit the game code to make the waves react in a bigger way at a much smaller wind ratio.

Option two would allow the game to better offer a live solution with our live weather.

Here are some examples:

This is the typical game with live weather today, the wind was 5

To create a better ocean effect, wind at 2-3 should react as it does in this picture at 35 (gusts are set to zero)as we see here:

Don’t forget you can also set wave height via the options, graphics menu.

I’m on Xbox and sadly do not have that as an option. :frowning:

Can you post what that looks like and the effect

My bad, didn’t realize that wasn’t included across both platforms.

But again, that is something that should be

Should be little more than half way down. Called “Waves”

I reported this a while back and was told that I did not know what I was talking about and that the oceans were just fine and very “realistic”. Being a “blue water sailor” I know what the oceans are suppose to look like and the ones on FS2020 are not what the ocean really looks like. I guess the programmers have never been out to sea in a sailboat or flown over the ocean in a “real” plane. Too bad!!!

I’m on PC (STEAM). Where’s that option? I don’t remember seeing it ever!

Isn’t it an option to change the overall quality of waves, NOT their actual height? I’ve always had that set on HIGH and my oceans and seas look flat and dull anyway.

It’s in the graphics option section, part way down.

I thought (could be mistaken and have to double check) it was wave height, low / medium / high.

I also use REX Weather force which sets the winds all the way through so I get waves when / where expected.

We really need to push this issue because it’s ridiculous flying over these glass like oceans/seas.

On Xbox we don’t even have the wave option in our settings and no option for Rex. We are really at a disadvantage on Xbox, this waves issue needs to be addressed.

Im a fisherman by proffession and to me the ocean looks perfectly fine atleast on PC and even on the pics OP posted. I dont want them to change it so a small breeze looks like a ■■■■ hurricane. So leave the ocean be, thank you…

The wave setting in options is for quality, not wave height.

Now I wish there was a way to downvote, hope this suggestion never happen…

The pics the op posted, there are things to consider, these ships are huge ships, so the waves at 35 knots looks exactly like they should compared to the sizes of those ships, same with the pics of the 5 knots waves, a few whitecaps it also looks exactly like it should. Also get into vr you will get a better picture how huge these waves really looks…

Is there a way to take a picture with VR.

Even landing on the water, there are just really no waves in the water. I’m not saying the need to go crazy with it, even better would allow the user to set how the waves react.
It just does not give enough movement for me

I played around a bit more with waves. My previous comment was perhaps a little too aggressive with the settings. The problem is really that waves are tied to the wind and that kills ant variety and movement that we might see. It should be independent and the waves vary within a certain amount based on the days weather conditions.

A typical nice day should vary the waves from 3-12 a few whitecaps but noting too serious (see pics)

A stormy, rainy day should vary from 15-25

Larger storm cells like hurricanes would go from 30-40

This would give a nice variety and give much needed movement to the oceans. It should not be wind dependent as having tied to the wind, we never see variety.

I seem to remember plans to eventully include an ocean floor mesh, tides and breakers which could be why they don’t give it special attention now.
