Oculus quest 2 graphical brightness line

Hello all,

So recently when I’ve been using my oculus quest in msfs it works fine but every so often a line will appear across the VR display, it almost splits the screen with the lower half at a much brighter contrast and pixelated graphics while the top half remains Normal. I’ve tried resetting VR during game and restarting game but still get the issue. Was wondering if anyone has had the same issue?

Had the same issue. Solved by reducing video card memory overclock and reinstalling oculus software. Also, you can get rid of the line even ingame without restarting if you change the link bitrate, with oculus debug tool or oculus tray tool.

Spent weeks with Oculus support on this one. Run a repair on your Oculus software

https://support.oculus.com/248898085828772/

Let us know how it works out

So this has happened to me again! I only get it in Elite Dangerous, although I can produce it in other Apps, ED for some reason is very susceptible to it.

I tried your “adjusting link cables bitrate” on the fly and that worked! TY

I never used to have this on my old 1080ti card, its only since upgrading to a 3080. Are you both also on 30xx cards?

I honestly spent weeks with Oculus Support, I was sure I was going to have to RMA the unit, but one last request came for me to repair the Oculus Desktop software and after a few sessions in ED it had all gone so I closed the ticket, hence my recommendation above.

Ive now re-opened the ticket and will tell them about this Bitrate fix. Again in ED I had to change the Bitrate twice in around 10 mins so its not a permanent fix, although I should try a range of numbers and see if lower or higher fixes it permanently.

Its very annoying, if you’ve ever been snorkelling or diving and your mask fills halfway with water this is the effect!

Yes, i also have a 3060ti. For me, reducing the videocard overclock only on the memory solved it. If you do not have overclock, can you try downclocking only your video card memory about 200-300 mhz and check if it solves anything?

LE: Regarding the bit rate change, even if you put 5mbit bitrate, the problem will still appear, just slower, and the quality will be terrible overall. In oculus tray tool i use distortion curvature low, encoding resolution 4080 and bitrate of 300. I tried 500 but not seen any difference whatsoever, so i left it at 300.

Its interesting you have a 30x card as well, as I say I had no issues on the 1080ti.

Re downclocking, i can sort of correlate to my experience in xplane, as long as I keep xplane out of HDR mode its perfect. As soon as I go HDR I get it - i.e. when I start pushing the card.

Its like the 30xx cards are “too powerful” for the headset.

My card is factory overclocked card but I am not OC it any further.

I have this on a 2060 as well so its not only the 30xx. If it starts happening it usually gets worse and worse

if i exit vr mode and re-enter it, it sometimes fixes it. Only with link, not Virtual Desktop

Wow thanks. Can I ask you to try something. Do you know how to manually set the encode bitrate using the Oculus Debug tool? On standard set up its located here

C:\Program Files\Oculus\Support\oculus-diagnostics\OculusDebugTool.exe

Can you try setting encode bitrate to 200

My gut feel is the cards or the software are over driving the Oculus link. all thanks to @Player893572846 for the lead. I have had a few goes in Elite dangerous on this setting and not had the issue.

Do you get it across games or is it a particular one your seeing it on?

it can happen in every game, changing bitrate doesn’t seem to change anything. Ive tried high bitrates, lowbitrates, high encode resolutions, low encode resolutions, distortion curvature high, low, etc. It happens no matter what.

I’m guessing its some kind of nvidia driver issue but I cant find anyone talking about it and i dont know if they know about it. I’ve been getting it for at least since i played half life alyx last june

This is the only thread where I have found anyone talking about the issue. Have you raised tickets with Oculus?

Same here. I have this lower half screen issue for some time. I will try to reduce the memory overclock, if it doesn’t happen again I will tell you.

I have the same issue - i5-9400F, RTX 3070, 32GB
I think this issue doesn’t get as much attention as it is a VR/OCULUS issue and becaues there are more pressing problems to fix in general. I hope a driver update will fix this in the future.

Hey all thanks for the posts, I should add this is not a MSFS2020 only issue, its repeatable across many games. I myself do not have it in MSFS2020

So I hadn’t used VR for a few weeks as that problem was making it almost useless to use.
I decided last night to go back into it and tweak a few things.

I started to have an issue with white flashes - almost the VR is jumping in and out of VR constantly. I searched the forums and found out that the latest beta for the oculus is causing more of the white flashes. I opted out of the public beta and that has fixed the white flash issue BUT for me it’s also solved the pixelated bright line.

I’ve also found that even accessing the link desktop is smoother and less stuttery. I’m getting higher game play now. Hopefully this might be helpful to some of you

I am having the exact same issue.
I have a RTX3070 Gaming OC from Gigabyte.
Today Nvidia has launched the 461.72 Driver and it has improved the performance and stability. Link is not disabling as often as it was before. But I have noticed that if I increase rendering scale and other settings, this line comes back, making it unplayable.
I think that I will stick to Virtual desktop for the moment. It is providing a far better experience than with link.

Hi folks I did something that afterwards I haven’t seen this issue.

Lower or disable your ram xmp profile. I was running an xmp profile at the top of my motherboards capabilities, after i lowered it down to 3000mhz I haven’t seen this issue.

So the line came back for me but I’m using VR now via virtual desktop and the performance is a lot better.

Not just in msfs but in other PC VR applications.

Virtual Desktop isn’t nearly as good for me as link for this game due to the 18hz mode available on link. I can run at 100 render scale and get it smooth on link, cant on VD.

VD is much better for regular gaming (half life alyx), but unusable in things that require minimum lag (beat saber) and extremely demanding games on older hardware (flight sim), imo.

I do hope everyone has a chance to submit support requests to Oculus. It seems related to overdriving the headset. Whilst we all have different ways of solving it they all seems to rely on lowering a setting wether headset related of downgrading graphics overclocks.

Hi everyone,

I am also getting this issue, I have it in Assetto Corsa, Dirt 2, Blade and Sorcery and Elite Dangerous.

The weirdest thing is I was playing Dirt 2 and it pops up regularly when I’m in the cockpit view, I accidentally a few moments ago changed my view to the one without seeing the front of the car so I was basically a hood ornament and the line instantly disappears. I changed back to the cockpit view and the line was gone, it eventually comes back and so I change the view again and then it goes away. It’s very weird.

My settings for the Oculus Debug tool are 1.2-pixel override, 3664 encode resolution width and 400 encode bitrate.

Also I have a RTX 2080ti, i7 9700k with 32gb or ram.
