Currently I have an Oculus Rift (the normal one, not the S). VR with MSFS is really nice, but the low resolution of the Oculus (1080x1200) makes it hard to read anything. So I’m considering an upgrade to a new generation with better resolution.
There currently seem to be two options:
HP Reverb G2 (2160x2160)
Oculus Quest 2 (1832x1920)
I’ve heard, the tracking of the controllers with the G2 is not so good. Can anyone describe what that means? Is it noticeable for everyone or can you still play action games?
For the Quest 2, what are the downsides? I don’t like a standalone solution because there is no need for causal potato smartphone graphics when you own a beefy pc. When you connect the Quest 2 with a cable to a PC, does it behave like a real VR device (Oculus Rift, Valve Index)? What are the downsides?
I own both headsets and although I’m not a pro, I will give my opinions.
I have used both headsets with MSFS, and although both work nicely the main difference between the two is the visual aspect. In the Quest 2 the focus is more consistent across the entire field of view, whereas the G2 has a highly focused “sweet spot” in the center of view and outside of that everything is a bit more blurry than the Quest–at least to my eyes. I still prefer the G2 because I find it more comfortable to wear and the more vibrant colors and clarity of focus (at least in the center of view) make it more enjoyable to look through. The sound is also much better in the G2.
As for the controllers, MSFS doesn’t use them, anyway. For other games the Reverb controllers work just fine for me, although I prefer the Quest 2 right now because of controller compatibility with Oculus and even Steam games. Setting the Reverb G2 controller bindings with Steam games is a huge complicated hassle which I have pretty much given up trying to understand. With games that are compatible, though, I have not seen any controller tracking issues with the G2.
So, I use the Reverb G2 exclusively for MSFS, and the Quest 2 for pretty much everything else.
