Oculus Quest 2 Runtime as Windows Mixed Reality OpenXr Runtime

I have been reading for hours about using VR with Oculus quest 2.

So far I have been able to run VR with Steam VR (virtual desktop app) or Oculus Link.

I have some confusion, Is it possible to run VR with Windows Mixed Reality OpenXr Runtime. I am talking about the purple application that I downloaded from the Microsoft store. Under Installation Status I can chose “Set as active runtime”. That seems to work when I go and look at regedit. But Demo scene still says " The active OpenXR runtime does not have a head mounted display system available…" blah blah blah… And under system status its clear that it is not set up.

The only reason I want to change from SteamVR to this is to try and see if I can gain some performance as I have a low end machine.

Side Comment:
Other reason why I want to use OpenXR Developer Tools for Windows Mixed Reality is because of the new OpenXR NIS Scaler configuration tool…

Or does it work with SteamVR alone?

No the Windows Mixed Reality apps are only for those headsets, you don’t need them for the Quest 2. It won’t work.

Re: NIS scaler, you do not need to go through those steps. Those videos were made by folks using Windows Mixed Reality. You can skip the parts that mention the OpenXR Developer Tools.

Thanks, that helps. Looks like I will continue to use SteamVR as it is the best performing for me. The NIS Scaler tool doesnt seem to give any fps drops, Is there a way to tell if it is installed correctly? Or should I try to crank the sharpness up to see if I get differences?

Look for the OpenXR NIS Scaler Configuration tool (should be on your Desktop or Start menu) and confirm that there is green text saying “the layer is active”.

It is working! So just to be clear, If I make an adjustment to the tool, Ill need to press CRT: + TAB twice to turn off and on VR to see changes?

Yup you need to restart the VR session with 2x Ctrl-Tab.
