Oculus Quest 2 + Ryzen 5600x + RTX 3080 - Optimal settings

Hi everyone!

After testing and testing and testing again and again… Here are my “optimal” settings for my system:

My PC:
CPU: Ryzen 5600x
GPU: Aorus 3080 Extreme 10Go
RAM: 32 Go
M.2 Evo plus SSD

In Bios: disable SMT (only for AMD processors). This gave me gain of 5 FPS in average! Now I know that for some other games, it might slightly decrease performances… so it’s up to you if you do it or not…

FS2020 on MS Store version

With these settings I usually have 30Fps on runways and 40 - 45 Fps when flying at low altitude and 50 when flying at high altitudes.

Nvdia settings: Vsync >> Fast

Oculus Debug Tool: Asynchronous Spacewarp >> Force 45FPS, ASW Disables (this help the “melting” effect during the game)

Quest 2 graphic preferences (in Oculus Software):

  • Refresh Rate 72Hz
  • Render Resolution >> 1.7. For me this is the most important setting! Below that, the image quality is just not good. Everything is blurry and far objects are awful. With 1.7, you have a really enjoyable experience! Of course at the cost of FPS… But with a “high end” PC like mine, I still manage to get 30-40FPS.

In FS2020 PC Graphic settings: Windowed 800X600 and Global Rendering to "Low Settings)

In FS2020 VR Graphic settings:

  • Render Scaling: 100%

  • Anti Aliasing: TAA

  • Terrain Level of Details: 100. I’ve seen many people tunring it up to 200 but honestly, I don"t see a huge difference in game in terms of image quality and the FPS drop is huge!

  • Terrain Vector Data: High

  • Buildings: Medium: Setting it to medium really helps FPS on the runways. To much FPS Drops at higher settings

  • Trees: High

  • Grass and Busehes: Medium

  • Object Level of Details: 100 (same remark as for Level of terrain)

  • Volumetric clouds: Medium (no need to explain…)

  • Texture Resolution: High

  • Anisotropic Filtering: 16X

  • Texture Supersampling: 6X6

  • Texture Synthesis: High

  • Water Waves: Medium

  • Shadow Maps: 1536

  • Terrain Shadows; 1024

  • Contact Shadows: High

  • Windsheild Effects: Ultra (as you are very close to the windshield, it’s better to have the best quality possible on the effects)

  • Ambiant Oclusion: High

  • Reflections: Off. I just don’t like how reflections are handeled in the game in general. So even in “non VR” mode, I tend to turn it off. And in VR you gain many FPS with this off (depending on where you fly).

  • Light shaft: off

  • Bloom: Off

  • Glass Cockpit Refresh Rate: Low

A few general tips:

  • Try to fly “simple” planes (without glass panel). They run much smoother than the more sophisticated planes with glass panels ect…). The Savage Cub is perfect for VR. The Gauges are perfectly readable as they are quite big from the start!

  • Try to avoid big cities and prefer Bush Flying or flying quite high. As much as I love flying over New York, it’s just not very enjoyable in VR…

I hope this can help a few of you getting the best results.

What is the effect of that setting on VR performance? I mean, it shouldn’t make any difference if you leave it to 1920x1080, does it?

I noticed a increase in FPS (5 or 6) when I put the “PC” un windowed and lower the resolution.

I guess it’s because it still renders the game (with the “double” eyes) on my main screen (so the “PC”).

When I set Oculus app to 72Hz I can only set render resolution to 1.5x - if I set to 90Hz I can then select 1.7x…

Also did you change the OpenXR to Oculus in the registry?
